Scotland The Ideal Touring Destination For All

The prospect of lying on a sun-kissed beach for a week or two in the summer is something that helps many people to stay focused during the winter months. Whenever the frost is at its hardest and the snow is causing chaos on the roads, it’s the thought of an ice cold drink and a vacant sun lounger that enables many of us to get through the period unscathed.

However, a growing number of tourists are turning their backs on the traditional hot-spots of Spain, Portugal and Greece to explore other regions instead. They will arrive at a specific airport, hire a car and set off on the open road to see what can be discovered, and what adventures they are likely to encounter along the way.

In the United Kingdom, there is a stunning mix of historic towns, ancient landmarks and breath-taking countryside. Perhaps the jewel in the country’s crown for those who are touring around is Scotland, which has a unique heritage and of course a stunning selection of mountains, rivers and lochs.

The northern coast of the region looks out across the wild seas and is home to a significant number of quaint fishing villages in which time appears to have stood still for centuries. Be aware, however, that even in the summer months the winds can howl in off the sea, so always be prepared to keep a sweater and a warm coat in the car.

Even when the weather is at its coldest, though, the warmth of the welcome is always able to redress the balance. The local pubs and hotels cater for tourists throughout the year, and a few hours in any of these hostelries is enough to keep the chills at bay. The people are proud of their region, and are keen to ensure visitors have a positive experience during their stays.

For motorists who wish to visit a city as well as the more remote areas, the beautiful and iconic Edinburgh is often top of the agenda. Auld Reekie, as it’s known to locals, is one of the most attractive cities in the world, combining as it does a strong sense of history and an impressively go-ahead attitude that bodes well for a bright future. It’s one of the finest places for those who want to explore, because interesting landmarks and buildings are never far away.

The best views across the city are available from one of the most famous locations of all. Edinburgh Castle sits atop a hill at the top end of the Royal Mile, and stands majestically over the whole metropolis. When visiting this particular spot, make sure you have a camera to hand, because the vistas are so memorable they will last a lifetime.

And when the hustle and bustle of the city gets too much, a drive along the coast will soon restore your faith in the world around you. Dotted along the shoreline are remote coves, attractive beaches, world-famous golf courses and fine restaurants and inns. A holiday spent touring Scotland is almost a life-changing experience, so start planning as soon as possible - you’ll be glad you did.
