2013 has already experienced some exciting events; not least the start of Beyonce’s “Mrs Carter” world tour and Rihanna getting back together with Chris Brown before breaking up… again. But shrugging our favourite divas aside, this year we have seen the continued rise in popularity of the bespectacled smarty-pants that forms the token gorgeous geek in multiple popular sitcoms.

Here are the top five savvy, book smart ladies who’ve stolen our hearts.

America Ferrera
The original nerdy girl, Betty Suarez played superbly by America, sparked the birth of the loveable stereotype. She became well and truly embedded in television history as a character that we could all relate to, admire, and aspire to be like. With her goofy braces, thick rimmed glasses and eccentric style, (who can forget that poncho!) America portrayed a character with an individuality and genuine sweetness that we would all like the confidence to be able to achieve.

 Mayim Bialik
Queen of the super nerds in the popular TV series, The Big Bang Theory, Mayim plays the perfect nerdy-girl with her cheeky quips, quirky style and ‘never been asked to dance’ hang-ups. Playing Sheldon’s ‘friend that’s a girl but not a girlfriend’ earned Mayim an Emmy Award Nomination in 2012 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Oh, and Mayim also has a PHD in Neuroscience. It doesn’t get much more inspirationally nerdy than that.

Jennifer Lawrence
The all action, super hero-esque nerd girl who shot to fame through her bow and arrow wielding performance in “The Hunger Games”, defines herself as a tomboy. Jennifer isn’t shy of shedding her tomboy looks- and her jaw dropping dress at this year’s Oscars saw her dominate ‘Best Dressed’ lists around the globe, proving this nerdy girl know how to sass it up.  With her distinctive husky voice and insatiable craving for junk food she places herself as the pretty, sporty girl, championing nerdy-girl power.

Lena Dunham
The most recent to burst onto the nerdy-girl radar in her own breakout series “Girls”, Lena, as a personality and a character, similarly embodies the kind of individuality and awkward insecurity that America Ferrera portrayed so well in Ugly Betty.

Since capturing our attention, she regularly dominates the twittersphere, sharing amusing anecdotes about her mum and responding to trolls with incredible wit. Lena is also a keen iPhone photographer and regularly uploads Instagram edits of her adopted dog, Lamby. This nerdy-girl loves social media and is definitely one to watch.

Zooey Deschanel
The ultimate nerdy girl, Zooey Deschanel is the embodiment of social awkwardness and embarrassing dance moves. In the TV show, “New Girl”, which she produces, her character, Jess is rarely seen without her iPhone in its red, bunny ears case; and is even defined as ‘adorkable’.

With the dress sense of a little girl gone wild in a dressing up box, sprinkled with accessories from her grandma’s wardrobe; Zooey not only evokes the supreme nerdy girl in her acting roles. In real life, her website URL is hellogiggles.com. How adorkable!

Who are your favourite girl nerds and why?
