Older Than Dracula: In Search Of The English Vampire

by

The Premature Burial. Antoine Wiertz (1854)
The Premature Burial. Antoine Wiertz (1854)
The story of Count Dracula as many of us know it was created by Bram Stoker, an Irishman, in 1897. But most of the action takes place in England, from the moment the Transylvanian vampire arrives on a shipwrecked vessel in Whitby, North Yorkshire, with plans to make his lair in the spookily named Carfax estate, west of the river in London.

But Dracula wasn’t the first vampire in English literature, let alone the first to stalk England. The vampire first made its way into English literature in John Polidori’s 1819 short story “The Vampyre”. Polidori’s vampire, Lord Ruthven, is inspired by a thinly disguised portrait of the predatory English poet, Lord Byron, in Lady Caroline Lamb’s novel Glenarvon (1816). So the first fictional vampire was actually a satanic English Lord.

It is nearly 200 years since this Romantic/Byronic archetype for a vampire emerged – but what do we know about English belief in vampires outside of fiction? New research at the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered and reappraised a number of vampire myths – and they are not all confined to the realms of fiction.

The Croglin Vampire reputedly first appeared in Cumberland to a Miss Fisher in the 1750s. Its story is retold by Dr Augustus Hare, a clergyman, in his Memorials of a Quiet Life in 1871. According to this legend, the vampire scratches at the window before disappearing into an ancient vault. The vault is later discovered to be full of coffins that have been broken open and their contents, horribly mangled and distorted, are scattered over the floor. One coffin only remains intact, but the lid has been loosened. There, shrivelled and mummified – but quite intact – lies the Croglin Vampire.

Elsewhere in Cumbria, the natives of Renwick, were once known as “bats due to the monstrous creature that is said to have flown out of the foundations of a rebuilt church there in 1733. The existence of vampire bats, which sucked blood wouldn’t be confirmed until 1832, when Charles Darwin sketched one feeding off a horse on his voyage to South America in The Beagle. The creature in Renwick has been referred to as a “cockatrice” – a mythical creature with a serpent’s head and tail and the feet and wings of a cockerel – by Cumbrian County History. But it’s the myth of the vampire bat that has prevailed in the surrounding villages and is recorded in conversations in local archives and journals

What picture emerges then in this history of the English vampire? The Croglin Vampire has never been verified – but it has an afterlife in the 20th century, appearing as The British Vampire in 1977 in an anthology of horror by Daniel Farson, who turns out to be Stoker’s great-grandnephew.

The Nightmare. John Henry Fuseli (1781)
Nightmare in Buckinghamshire
But there is one case that has no connection to fiction, the little-known Buckinghamshire Vampire, recorded by William of Newburgh in the 12th century. Historical records show that St Hugh, the Bishop of Lincoln, was called upon to deal with the terrifying revenant and learned to his astonishment, after contacting other theologians, that similar attacks had happened elsewhere in England.

St Hugh was told that no peace would be had until the corpse was dug up and burned, but it was decided that an absolution – a declaration of forgiveness, by the church, absolving one from sin – would be a more seemly way to disable the vampire. When the tomb was opened the body was found to have not decomposed. The absolution was laid inside on the corpse’s chest by the Archdeacon and the vampire was never again seen wandering from his grave.

The Buckinghamshire revenant did not have a “vampire” burial – but such practices are evidence of a longstanding belief in vampires in Britain. Astonishingly, the medieval remains of the what are thought to be the first English vampires have been found in the Yorkshire village of Wharram Percy. The bones of over 100 “vampire” corpses have now been uncovered buried deep in village pits. The bones were excavated more than half a century ago and date back to before the 14th century. They were at first thought to be the result of cannibalism during a famine or a massacre in the village but on further inspection in 2017 the burned and broken skeletons were linked instead to deliberate mutilations perpetrated to prevent the dead returning to harm the living – beliefs common in folklore at the time.

Vile bodies
The inhabitants of Wharram Percy showed widespread belief in the undead returning as revenants or reanimated corpses and so fought back against the risk of vampire attacks by deliberately mutilating their own dead, burning bones and dismembering corpses, including those of women, children and teenagers, in an attempt to stave off what they believed could be a plague of vampires. This once flourishing village was completely deserted in the aftermath.

Just recently at an ancient Roman site in Italy the severed skull of a ten-year-old child was discovered with a large rock inserted in the mouth to prevent biting and bloodsucking. Then skull belongs to a suspected 15th-century revenant which they are calling locally the “Vampire of Lugano”.

There has been a wealth of other stories from the UK and other parts of Western Europe – but, despite this, thanks to the Dracula legend, most people still assume such practises and beliefs belong to remote parts of Eastern Europe. But our research is continuing to examine “vampire burials” in the UK and is making connections to local myths and their legacy in English literature, many years before the Byronic fiend Count Dracula arrived in Yorkshire carrying his own supply of Transylvanian soil. The Conversation

More About F.O.E. (Face Of Evil):
(Warning! Spoiler Alert!)
Breaking News! War vet with PTSD shoots among the crowd!… Maybe he saw enemies, monsters… It’s about real life. It’s about F.O.E. This is not another shootout zombie flick. It’s about the inner journey of a person on the run from his demons, real or not, from an unknown enemy, who may attack anywhere, anytime. Perhaps it’s the story of a victim, a brainwashed pawn, a scapegoat in a devious system, or perhaps it’s just the story of an unwilling executioner. As fear confuses and deforms reality, Jay meets surreal characters and learns bits of truth on his way to salvation, or perhaps to damnation. The movie touches contemporary issues, like mysterious epidemics, terrorism paranoia, vets PTSD, mass shootings, big brother conspiracy and more. It’s a contemporary tale of realistic madness. Yet, it never loses its focus on entertaining, which is why we watch movies, after all.

'Queen of Horror' Weds U.S. Navy War Hero in Star-Studded Celebrity Wedding

by
#1 bestselling author Mylo Carbia's latest hit novel, 'Violets are Red'
#1 bestselling author Mylo Carbia's latest hit novel, 'Violets are Red'
By now you may have heard about the inspiration behind #1 bestselling author Mylo Carbia's latest hit novel, Violets are Red, which tells the story of a Manhattan housewife who captures her husband's young mistress, and quietly keeps her prisoner in the basement of their Upper East Side townhouse.
The modern-day fairy tale –– inspired by Carbia's own surprise divorce –– has taken the literary world by storm, and is a clear choice for avid readers looking for a suspense-filled, dark thriller to celebrate the Halloween season.
In a surprise twist Carbia is known for, the 47-year-old writer shocked fans by abandoning her usual "rock-and-roll-gothic" garb, and instead showcasing a princess-inspired dress and a three-tier rhinestone castle cake in an over-the-top fairy tale wedding to U.S. Navy Retired war hero, Kurt Lund, on September 16, 2018.
The nuptials took place just north of Cancun, Mexico, at the Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort, under tight security given the eccentric guest list comprised of musicians, artists, and actors –– including cast members of The Walking Dead.
Former Collective Soul band members, Ross Childress and Shane Evans, along with lead singer Stephen Wines (now known as 2 Broke Kings), played live at the wedding reception, and sang with the bride during the ceremony.
"It was truly an epic, fairy tale dream wedding come true," said one guest, a friend of Carbia since middle school. "We all love Mylo so much, and hated watching her go through hell in past relationships, so to see her finally meet a kind, honorable, down-to-earth man makes us all now believe that things really dohappen for a reason."
Kurt Lund, 45, spent twenty years in the United States Navy, and earned thirty-five ribbons and medals, including four U.S. Navy and Marine Achievement Medals, for his efforts in Afghanistan and at sea across the globe.

Ranked 7th in 'The Top 10 Horror Authors Alive Today,' and among 'The 250 Most Influential Authors' by Richtopia.com, Carbia's debut novel The Raping Of Ava DeSantis hit #1 Bestseller in Horror, won the 2016 Silver Falchion Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fiction, and is currently in development to become a major motion picture.
Violets are Red (released by Vanderbilt Publishing) also hit the #1 spot in New Releases and is being touted as "The best horror-thriller novel of the year" by Top10Novels.com.
The newlyweds plan to settle in Palm Beach, Florida, along with the bride's 13-year-old son. Carbia will continue writing novels and screenplays full-time, with plans to release her third novel and first science fiction thriller, Z.O.O., late Summer 2019.
In addition, the couple will be enjoying their honeymoon this weekend, October 4-7, at the Women in Horror Film Festival in Peachtree City, GA where Carbia is one of the celebrity headliners.
"I have a whole new perspective on life after experiencing the wedding of my dreams," she explained. "The only thing we are guaranteed is change, so from now on, I will cherish every moment with those that matter and be grateful for every blessing that comes my way."

More About 'Violets are Red':
Set in New York City's wealthy Upper East Side, Violets are Red, tells the story of an aging Manhattan housewife who captures her husband's young mistress and quietly keeps her prisoner in the basement of their multi-million-dollar townhouse.

"Think 'Real Housewives' meets 'Misery' but with a fantastic twist ending you won't see coming," says Mark Miller from Top10Novels.com. "We think it's one of the very best novels of the year so far, but we can understand why women's rights groups may have an issue with two ladies battling one another to win over the affection of a man."

The book's female author, Mylo Carbia, makes no apologies for writing a novel advertised as The Ultimate Catfight. In fact, she has met this controversy before.

As a Hollywood screenwriter turned novelist, Carbia's debut novel The Raping Of Ava DeSantis hit #1 bestseller and won the Silver Falchion Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fiction, despite having the main character seduce one of her perpetrators 15 years after a brutal sexual assault. At the time, feminists were outraged with the storyline and launched an online campaign to boycott the novel, but with recent news of Harvey Weinstein's systematic abuse and the resulting #MeToo Movement, Carbia's first novel is currently in development into a movie and targeted for release in theaters late next year.

"Violets are Red, is a cautionary tale of how being the mistress or wife of a cheating man can literally destroy you," said Carbia recently. "I hope Violets are Red, does for infidelity what War Of The Roses did for divorce––show the most extreme consequences so that people may disengage in a civil fashion if need be."

Carbia has been open about her past struggle with a surprise divorce, and resulting thoughts of self-destruction. "It was the worst time of my life," she told reporter Tony Sokol two years ago, amid rumors of her then husband leaving her for a six-month pregnant, younger woman. "Not only was it an emotional crisis, it was a financial crisis, a legal crisis, and an 'immediate need to relocate' crisis all within several days. Writing was the only way I could cope with the pain, and this novel is my gift to women dealing with betrayal trauma everywhere."

"Night of the Living Dead" 50th anniversary - Poster
A half-century ago, the living dead had their night, but for decades the inexorable dread of George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" has been seen only in murky, fuzzy versions.
On Wednesday, October 24, and Thursday, October 25, only, "Night of the Living Dead" returns to nearly 600 movie theatres nationwide in a newly restored and remastered version presented by Fathom Events, Image Ten Inc. and Living Dead Media, in association with Janus Films and the Criterion Collection. "Night of the Living Dead" will play at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (local time) both days, presented through Fathom's Digital Broadcast Network (DBN).
⏩ Commemorating its 50th anniversary, "Night of the Living Dead" will be accompanied by a new behind-the-scenes look at the making of this iconic film.
Tickets for "Night of the Living Dead" are available beginning today at FathomEvents.com and participating theater box offices. A complete list of theater locations can be found on the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).
Prior to his death in 2017, Romero supervised the restoration of "Night of the Living Dead" in anticipation of the film's 50th anniversary. He worked with the film's sound engineer, Gary Streiner, to restore and remaster the movie in 4K Ultra HD from the original camera negative.

The Museum of Modern Art, The Film Foundation, The George Lucas Family Foundation, and The Celeste Bartos Film Preservation Center supported the restoration project.
The film tells the deceptively simple story of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse and find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead flesh-eating ghouls. Romero's claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combining gruesome gore with acute social commentary, while quietly breaking ground by casting an African-American actor (Duane Jones) in its leading role.
Named one of the 10 best horror films of all time by Rolling Stone, "Night of the Living Dead" continues to influence pop culture and remains loved by films and critics alike: The film holds a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
"There are not many films that warrant the kind of attention 'Night of the Living Dead' has received from the Museum of Modern Art, but there are also not many films whose influence remains so strong in global popular culture 50 years after it was made. George A. Romero's film has never looked better, and we are proud to present this dazzling new restoration to film lovers and horror fans," said Fathom Events VP of Studio Relations Tom Lucas.
Steve Wolsh, CEO of Living Dead Media, added, "It's been a two-year labor of love to bring this stunning version of 'Night of the Living Dead' into theaters for the 50th anniversary. This movie was intended to be seen in a dark theater with a live audience, and this restoration gives fans and newcomers alike a chance to see the film as they've never seen it before."

Hivemind Acquires Hit Comic Series GIDEON FALLS for TV Adaptation

by
Gideon Falls, the hit comic series from New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire and illustrator Andrea Sorrentino, will soon be coming to television in partnership with Hivemind
Gideon Falls, the hit comic series from New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire and illustrator Andrea Sorrentino, will soon be coming to television in partnership with Hivemind
Hivemind today announced that it has won an intense multi-studio bidding war and acquired the rights to bring the hit Image Comics comic book series, GIDEON FALLS, to television in partnership with co-creators Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino
Hivemind's Jason BrownSean DanielKathy Lingg and Dinesh Shamdasani will executive produce the series alongside co-creators Lemire and Sorrentino with high-level creative talent already circling the project.
An atmospheric thriller colliding rural mystery and urban horror, the series follows an ensemble cast of seemingly random strangers – a washed-up Catholic priest, an uncompromising female sheriff, and a young recluse obsessed with unraveling a conspiracy buried in his city's trash – as they become drawn into a mystery connected to a long-forgotten local legend.
Established in 2018, Hivemind is the new production entity from long-time producing partners Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, Bad Robot veteran Kathy Linggand former Valiant Entertainment CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani
Dedicated to partnering with high-level creative talent and globally recognized intellectual properties from the worlds of science fiction, fantasy, horror, comic books, video games, anime, and more,
Hivemind recently inked a first-look deal with Amazon Studios. GIDEON FALLS marks a major new rights acquisition for the label, which will develop the series as an hour-long horror drama based on Lemire and Sorrentino's repeatedly sold-out, critically acclaimed comic title of the same name that instantly became one of 2018's biggest breakout hits upon its debut in March.
"GIDEON FALLS is psychological horror told with a deeply humanistic touch, a story about imperfect people who confront their own demons – imagined and supernatural alike," said Hivemind Co-President Jason Brown. "It is this kind of expertly fashioned, character-focused genre storytelling that inspired us to form Hivemind, and it is our mission to collaborate with world-class authors, artists, and rights holders like Jeff and Andrea to bring their stories to the screen in an authentic way."
GIDEON FALLS is the latest property to join Hivemind's quickly expanding roster of film and television projects.
⏩ The company currently produces the acclaimed science fiction series The Expanse – which recently made a historic move to Amazon – as well as Netflix's upcoming adaptation of The Witcherbased on the series of novels that inspired the best-selling game franchise. Its next feature film will be Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark with producer/co-writer Guillermo del Toro and director AndrĆ© Ƙvredal, which begins production this summer.
"GIDEON FALLS is a story that is very near to our hearts, and Andrea and I could not be more excited to be partnering with Hivemind to bring the terror, and the story of Fred, Norton and The Black Barn, to an even wider audience," said series co-creator and writer Jeff Lemire.
"It's great to imagine GIDEON FALLS, and all these characters whom we've been working so hard to realize in the graphic novel, now coming to life on TV screens," added series co-creator and artist Andrea Sorrentino.
GIDEON FALLS will also notably re-team Lemire with producer Dinesh Shamdasani, who joins Hivemind as Co-President. Lemire and Shamdasani previously collaborated on multiple best-selling comics projects, including The Valiant and Bloodshot Reborn, during his time at the helm of Valiant Entertainment, which Shamdasani departed following a major acquisition in early 2018.
In addition to his duties at Hivemind, Shamdasani is also currently producing a big-screen adaptation of the Bloodshot comic book series for Sony Pictures with star Vin Diesel, director Dave Wilson, and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer that is set to begin filming this summer.
"GIDEON FALLS is one of the most inventive stories anywhere in comics today, colliding a psychologically complex and intellectually nuanced cast against a stark and terrifying terrain of science fiction and horror," said Shamdasani. "It's no surprise that it comes from the brilliant minds of two of the most talented creators in the comics medium – Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino – or that it sparked a massive multi-studio bidding war."
