Evangelicals And Trump – Lessons From The Nixon Era

by

More than 81% of the US’s protestant evangelicals voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election. A year and a half into his presidency, they seem as dedicated to him as ever – and just as ready to make excuses for his decidedly un-Christian misdeeds.

Many Christian rightists, among them “family values” foghorn James Dobson, consider Trump a “baby Christian”. His lewd and predatory comments about women are simply the mark of a very imperfect man. Any of his actions, no matter how debased or inhumane, are dismissed or approved by the faithful.

On June 14 the attorney general, Jeff Sessions, used scripture to back up Trump’s cruel policies on refugees, which are currently tearing families apart along the southern border. Now, through the alchemy of political tribalism, the former casino owner, who once starred in a softcore porn film and who confessed on the radio to multiple affairs, is a Man of God who speaks his mind with confidence, however deep his ignorance.

But today’s evangelical leaders should be wary of hitching their wagon to an amoral, corrupt president. They could learn a thing or two from their predecessors, who aligned themselves closely with another troublesome president: Richard Nixon, whose malfeasance eventually became too much for the Christian right to tolerate. When the depth of Trump’s misconduct is established, will his prayer warrior enthusiasts have to rethink their allegiance?

For now, the love affair continues. In May 2018, First Baptist Dallas pastor, Robert Jeffress,, proclaimed on Fox News that the vast majority of his fellow believers hoped their candidate would win again in 2020. Trump has reciprocated by waxing pious at prayer breakfasts about the glories and mercies of God. His staunchly evangelical vice president, Mike Pence, assures Americans thatthere’s prayer going on on a regular basis in this White House”. Pence recently delivered a Trumpian, campaign-style address at a meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination.

Trump hagiographies are rolling off the presses: The Faith of Donald J. Trump, God and Donald Trump, The Trump Prophecies. The latter is being adapted into a film with the help of fundamentalist bastion Liberty University.

Trump iconographer and right-wing Mormon Jon McNaughton, who once depicted a resolute Barack Obama with the Constitution under his foot, has created a series of kitsch classics rendering Trump as a cross between prophet, priest and king. Perhaps one day in the not-so-distant future the artist will paint The Apotheosis of The Donald for the capitol rotunda.

What about the president’s habitual lying? His sordid past? His bragging and bullying? His demonising of refugees? His lawer’s payment of US$130,000 in alleged hush money to a porn star? Influential evangelist Franklin Graham recently said that Trump’s alleged affair with Stormy Daniels happened many years ago. It didn’t matter now.

In March 2018, the Pew Research Center reported that white evangelical support for Trump stood at 78%, a figure that had actually grown since news about Daniels broke. Democrats, progressive Christians, and the media hated Trump. That was reason enough for many others to support him.

Anyhow, said Graham: “I don’t think that he came to be president by mistake or by happenstance. I think somehow God put him in this position.” And Graham was even more assured when Trump told him that his father, Fred Trump, had taken him to an evangelistic crusade held by Graham’s own father, Billy.

Common cause
Perhaps the most famous and influential revivalist of the 20th century, Billy Graham preached a simple message of repentance and salvation. Though he claimed to stay away from politics, he was in fact deeply political, and a close confidant of presidents Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon and Reagan.

During the 1960 presidential campaign, Graham and his fellow travellers were faced with the possibility that John F. Kennedy, a Catholic and a Democrat, would be the next president. They rallied behind Richard Nixon – and stayed behind him for years.

Like Graham, many white evangelicals in the late 1960s and early 1970s found in Nixon a strong, powerful man who boldly stood up to liberal politicians, civil rights agitators and amoral student activists. When the president championed the “silent majority” on national television, they were heartened that such a Christian leader would speak for them. Nixon signalled that they were the true victims in the heated political and cultural battles of the age.

Nixon won 69% of the evangelical vote in his successful 1968 bid, and he instituted regular White House religious services at the start of his presidency. The president’s call for “law and order” also inspired the faithful. The head of the National Association of Evangelicals endorsed the Republican president in 1972, praising Nixon’s Cold War policies. 84% of evangelicals cast their votes for Nixon that year.

Their affinity lasted for most of Nixon’s doomed presidency. Graham’s private conversations with Nixon, recorded by a secret White House taping system, revealed the extent of the preacher’s partisanship and his willingness to encourage the president’s many prejudices and burning grudges. On February 10, 1972, Graham listened intently as the commander-in-chief railed against Jews and their overpowering influence. America’s pastor replied that “this stranglehold has got to be broken or the country’s going down the drain”. Nixon sympathised: “I can’t ever say that, but I believe it.

Keeping the faith
But the following year, the scandal over the Watergate break-in and subsequent cover-up dominated headlines and nightly TV news. Like other right-wing partisans, conservative Christians tried to brush it aside, but they could only ignore the obvious for so long – when it came down to it, their political hero was a squalid criminal. When Graham finally heard the profanity-laced Watergate tapes, he reportedly vomited.

Quite a few evangelicals, though disillusioned, didn’t really come to grips with the deeper meaning of it all, responding with a kind of born-again dodge.

Graham reckoned that Watergate was a symptom of a deeper, national moral problem. He wondered if Americans should have prayed more for their president. “There’s a little bit of Watergate in all of us,” Graham cautioned. Some – like the fundamentalist minister and Christian right political broker Jerry Falwell – continued to revere the disgraced former president. In the years after Nixon’s 1974 resignation, evangelicals voted Republican in growing numbers.

The ConversationWill Trump’s solid, evangelical base ever come to terms with the kind of person they voted into office? Will there be a reckoning in the coming months and years that will open their eyes to his cynical manipulations, his divisive, culture-war grandstanding, his philandering, or repeated lying? It’s difficult to say. But if the past is any guide, the answer is a resounding no.

About the book the TV series is based on:
Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons

ROCKET SCIENTIST KILLED IN PASADENA EXPLOSION screamed the headline of the Los Angeles Times. John Parsons, a maverick rocketeer who helped transform the rocket from a derided sci-fi plot line into a reality, was at first mourned as a scientific prodigy. But reporters soon uncovered a more shocking story: Parsons had been a devotee of black magic.

George Pendle re-creates the world of John Parsons in this dazzling portrait of prewar superstition, cold war paranoia, and futuristic possibility. Fueled by childhood dreams of space flight, Parsons was a leader of the motley band of enthusiastic young men who founded the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a cornerstone of the American space program. But Parsons's wild imagination also led him into the occult- for if he could make rocketry a reality, why not magic?

With a cast of characters including Howard Hughes, L. Ron Hubbard, and Robert Heinlein, Strange Angel explores the unruly consequences of genius.

Ten Parenting Lessons We Learned From "Modern Family"

by
The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan in Modern Family.

Arguably one of the most popular and well-loved TV shows on today is sitcom and mockumentary Modern Family (which is available on FOX+). With a total of 75 Emmy nominations and 22 wins, the series has provided both critics and fans everywhere with fresh and clever stories about three very different American families.
The Dunphys are the traditional nuclear family, the Pritchetts tell the step parent narrative, and the Tucker-Pritchetts represent the LGBT parenting family.
The diverse set-ups lay the groundwork for both comedic and relatable stories, bringing home laughter while also teaching very insightful and touching lessons.

Still from "Modern Family Seasons 1-6 (Trailer) for Fox+"
Here are 10 parenting lessons audiences can learn from Modern Family:
1. Celebrate the ways your children are different, even if you don't understand it
If there's anything that is clear from the characters of Modern Family, they all have a certain set of peculiarities. The children especially -- from Manny being a poetry-loving thespian to Alex an extreme geek, each kid from every family is unique. They even differ in heritage (Lily from Vietnam and Manny from Colombia).
Even if their parents don't always get their interests, they surely will always support them.
2. "Peer"-enting: Being a friend to your kids is important
"Act like a parent, talk like a peer". Famously quoted by Phil Dunphy in the first season, "Peer"-enting is being pals with your children while still guiding them, Phil demonstrates that connecting with them as humans and finding ways to be friends with them has benefits in making the trust and relationship stronger.
This way, you don't alienate them or detach yourself from their lives.
3. It's okay to admit your mistakes and flaws to your children
While many parents would rather that their children always see a perfect version of mom and dad, being open enough to admit mistakes to them takes the pressure of the parents and allows the children to connect better with them.
This has been showcased many times in Modern Family where viewers witness the kids being able to see their parents as people who aren't perfect, letting them to have more empathy for mom and dad.
4. Your kids can inherit the best of your qualities
Kids pick up on so many things. It would surprise parents to discover what qualities and traits of theirs their children have gained throughout the years.
Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of trust and letting the kids figure things out for themselves in order for mom and dad to see how much they've imprinted themselves on their children.
5. Walk the walk
Many parents can fall trap to telling their kids one thing while doing the exact opposite, and then chalking it off to "because I said so!" In one particular episode of Modern Family, viewers got to see the value of follow through and leading by example.
This ultimately lands so much stronger with children and really lets them learn the lesson well.
6. Don't underestimate your children
Sometimes, as parents, it's easy to want to micro-manage and try to get everything done for the kids. However, a little independence can go a long way and it could be surprising what children can come up with when given the opportunity.
Many times in the show, viewers saw Manny, Luke, or even Haley rise to the occasion, even when it was not expected of them.
7. Parents need regular "me-time" too
Parents can feel guilty about wanting to take some time for themselves, but not only is it healthy for their well-being, but it can also let the whole family decompress.
This rings especially true for new parents, just like when Mitch and Cam first adopted Lily. After some time for themselves, they felt refreshed and rebalanced for the new challenges ahead.
8. You and your partner are a team -- you should appreciate each other and make each other look good
Parent vs. Parent has been a running theme in Modern Family, maybe because it happens so often to real life parents. Whenever conflict happens, especially in front of the children, the tendency is to throw the other under the bus.
However, it is made clear in Modern Family that the best way out of any sticky situation is to work as a team, knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses, and continuing to appreciate each other.
9. Let kids make their own mistakes and experience life as it's happening to them, not as it happened to you
It's natural for parents to not want their children to commit the same mistakes that they did, but sometimes there are things that children have to experience for themselves. After all, parents can't protect their children from everything -- heartbreak, failure, or rejection.
There are some lessons that have to be learned the hard way, even if parents already know the outcome. In several episodes, viewers have seen all three parenting units of Modern Family have to watch as their own children have life happen to them.
10. You are probably doing just fine
The best parents will always doubt themselves at some point and feel like a total failure. The pressure of parenting is one of the toughest in the world and one of the most relatable moments from the show is when the parents show some vulnerability.
As long as everything is coming from a place of love, the mistakes can be forgiven and become a funny story in the end. Just take it from Modern Family.

Four Reasons Why Homeland's Carrie Mathison is One of Our Favorite TV Leads

by
Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison in Homeland.

Since its premiere in 2011, the American thriller Homeland has gone on winning both the hearts of viewers and accolades from the entertainment industry. The first season was met with near universal acclaim and was named the best show of 2011 by TV Guide.
To date, Homeland (which is available on FOX+) has won Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and Writing Emmy awards across the span of its run.
The show centers on CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and U.S Marine Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis).

The premise of the first season focused on agent Mathison's obsession with Brody's potential "threat" to the US after he had come home from being captured by Al-Qaeda.The series then evolves from this main storyline as new seasons came in.
Fans and critics have praised the show's exhilarating plot and gripping writing, but many have also credited the series' success to Claire Danes' performance as Carrie Mathison
Here are a few reasons why this agent is one of our favorite TV leads:
1.  She follows her instincts and gets things done
Part of why Carrie Mathison does so well as an agent is because even though constantly being doubted by her colleagues and peers, she takes the initiative to do things on her own.
In the first season, she trusted her gut and conducted her own investigations, which led her team to helpful answers.
2.  She goes to great lengths to help those she loves
Without revealing too many spoilers, one of Carrie Mathison's most defining traits is what she will do to help out a colleague or someone she cares for -- whether it's protecting them, helping prove their innocence, or saving them from terrorists.
3.  She is flawed and deals with her own demons
Many viewers enjoy Carrie Mathison as a character because of how real, raw, and human she is. A lot of this can be chalked up to how often she makes mistakes on the show, how her flaws are often flaunted, and how she deals with it -- even makes the best of it -- anyway.
From a dark family past to her constant struggle with her bipolar disorder to choices she's made that cost the lives of others, there is a lot of humanity and pain in her.
4.  She always puts the mission first
Despite all the setbacks and character flaws that Carrie is burdened with, one big reason why she is so riveting to watch and why audiences feel invested in her is because she has a true sense of determination and purpose.
Throughout the series, her convictions are always being tested but the fire in her to do what is right and complete her missions always bring her through.
