What is Sci-Fi?

I just came back from a school author visit where I spoke to students about world-building and writing. I used my book SAVING MARS as a point of reference, and a couple of the students weren’t shy about letting me know science fiction wasn’t really their thing before the talk got underway.
That’s okay, I told them. Did they like The Hunger Games? (Yes, they did.) And then we talked about how in Collins’s book, as in my own, the world of the story is set in an altered reality somewhere in the future where technology is a bit ahead of our own. That’s all science fiction really is, I explained. And then I listed off a few other books that fell in the same category: the Divergent books, the Across the Universe books, and the Uglies series.
My school visit made me think about what I like best in books and about the things that readers have said to me about SAVING MARS. I get a ton of, “This reminded me of my favorite science fiction stories,” and I also get a lot of, “I don’t even like science fiction, but I loved this book.” What’s funny is I think they are both responding to the same thing: Storytelling.
In my book, a girl faces circumstances way beyond what any of us would want to face and the story is about how she fights her way back, with love and loss and heartache along the way. If I’ve done my job, it will take you right along for the ride. And that is a lot of fun whether you call it sci-fi or fantasy or dystopian or whatever comes next!
