Generally, shoes are no more than a part of a costume or a prop in cinemas. However, sometimes certain shoes become an iconic image for the movie and gain massive popularity with fans. Here are 4 of the most iconic shoes in cinema history.

Marty McFly’s Nikes, Back to the Future II
In Back to the Future II, Doc Brown takes Marty McFly to the future, the year 2015. In order to create futuristic shoes, the makers of the movie got in touch with Tinker Hatfield, a designer at Nike. The end result would be one of the most iconic shoes in movie history. Featuring an electroluminescent outsole and a rechargeable battery, Mart McFly had no problems putting on his shoes and racing off with his hover skateboard. Of course, the best feature of the shoes was their ability to self-lace. Sadly, shoemakers are yet to turn it into reality. In 2011, Nike introduced the limited edition MAG series – replicas of the shoes worn by Michal J Fox in the movie. All proceeds from the 1500 pairs of shoes were donated to Michael J Fox’s research institute for Parkinson’s disease.

Cinderella’s glass slippers, Cinderella
Ask anyone to name the first Disney princess that pops into their head and the chances are, more often than not, that the answer will be Cinderella. While her stepsisters plot to marry the charm and marry the Prince, Cinderella is shunned and is banned from attending the royal ball. Thankfully, Cinderella has a fairy godmother who decides to do things her own way. Among the many things she conjures, the fairy godmother gives Cinderella a pair of glass slippers. As she flees from the ball at the stroke of midnight, she accidentally leaves her a slipper behind; the only thing with which her Prince could remember her by. The Prince and his royal entourage embark to find the owner of the glass slipper. Though many girls, including the stepsisters, desperately try to put the slipper on, it would not fit. Come Cinderella’s turn and the glass slipper was a perfect fit. These glass slippers weren’t just a fancy piece of footwear, but an important plot device.

Lloyd’s extra-furry mukluks, Dumb & Dumber
Dumb and Dumber is often regarded as one of the funniest slapstick comedies from Hollywood. With a title like that, it is not surprising that a number of strange clothing items and choices make their way into the movie. One of the more hilarious pieces of clothing in the movie was the extra-furry mukluks worn by Lloyd. Suddenly rich with new found money, Harry and Lloyd went shopping with the vigour of people with plenty of money and no taste. The faux fur mukluks pretty much defined their goofiness.

Dorothy’s ruby slippers, The Wizard of Oz
Just like Cinderella’s glass slippers, Dorothy’s ruby slippers are also an important plot device in this 1939 classic. After Dorothy’s house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, Glinda the Good Witch gives the ruby slippers to Dorothy Gale and sets her off to meet the Wizard of Oz, the only man with the power and know-how to send Dorothy back to Kansas. Of course, the Wicked Witch of the West has her own plans and wants to get her sister’s ruby slippers back from Dorothy. What unfolds is one of the most popular and excellent examples of storytelling in a movie. The red ruby slippers are perhaps one of the most iconic props in cinema history and definitely the most popular shoes ever worn by a fictional character.

Thanks to their amazing popularity, it is possible to buy replicas for all the shoes mentioned here. Yes, including Cinderella’s glass slippers.
