Dragons, Unicorns & Other Legendary Creatures

Magical and mythological creatures have enticed and fascinated people around the world for centuries. This can be seen in their depiction dating as far back as to the hieroglyphics of the ancient Egyptians. As time progressed, these fantastical animals were written about in world texts, described in countless tales and legends, and more recently these creatures have been depicted in various movies and TV shows. With such a wide array of mythical creatures having been depicted throughout history, how does one decide which of these beautiful creatures are the best? Magical and mythological creatures have enticed and fascinated people around the world for centuries. This can be seen in their depiction dating as far back as to the hieroglyphics of the ancient Egyptians. As time progressed, these fantastical animals were written about in world texts, described in countless tales and legends, and more recently these creatures have been depicted in various movies and TV shows. With such a wide array of mythical creatures having been depicted throughout history, how does one decide which of these beautiful creatures are the best? Here is a list of what are arguably the five most amazing and beautiful mythical/magical creatures.

The Phoenix
Finding its origin in an ancient Egyptian myth, the phoenix is a majestic, magical creature that was said to be born of fire. It is described as being unsurpassable in its beauty, with its plumage of fiery red and gold feathers. What makes the phoenix perhaps most unique is its expansive lifespan and the way in which it can regenerate. Depending on the source, phoenixes are said to have a lifespan of 500-1461 years; however, upon nearing its death, the phoenix will build a nest of cinnamon twigs and light itself on fire. It is then reborn as a young phoenix from its ashes. It is also said that the phoenix has tears that were capable of healing wounds. From this depiction, it is easy to see why this fantastic and amazing creature has captivated the imaginations of humans for thousands of years.

Unicorns
Legends of unicorns span thousands of years and exist in almost every region. They are said to be a symbol of freedom, purity, and true goodness. Unicorns are generally described as being horse like in appearance; however, their coats are said to be of a gleaming silver color, and they are said to have a large spiraling horn atop their head. Legend states that unicorns can only be seen and captured by maidens in the forest, which is why so few sightings of this magical creature have ever been reported (though occasionally reports from around the world will still come in of maidens claiming to have seen a unicorn). Unicorns are an obvious addition to this list because of the fact that their beauty is said to be incomparable and dazzling to those who view them.

Pegasus
Pegasus is a creature that comes from Greek mythology, and is arguably one of the best known mythological creatures from Greek mythology. He is a winged stallion that is said to be pure white in color. Pegasus is said to be the son of Poseidon, the god of the seas, and the snake haired Medusa. Poets, writers, and artists have been obsessed with the wonders of the stories of Pegasus for centuries, which is why he is one of the best-known magical creatures in history. He is often used in literature as a symbol for wisdom, truth, and knowledge, which seems fitting for such a beautiful and majestic mythological/magical creature.

Centaur
The centaur is another creature that comes from ancient Greek mythology, and it is said to have the attributes of both a man and a horse. They are traditionally depicted as horse from the waist down, but having a human head and torso. They have been described in various ways throughout history, sometimes as savage beasts that enjoy indulgence; however, in many cultures centaurs are said to be extremely wise and gentle. In many legends, they are the philosophizers who reflect on the great issues of the day.

Dragons
While dragons may not be creatures that would be considered beautiful by many people in the classical sense, mainly because of the terrifying way in which they are often portrayed in modern pop culture, dragons have been revered for their majesty and beauty around the world for over 4,000 years. They are usually depicted as magical, winged, serpent like creature that can breathe fire and perform wondrous acts. Dragons hold much importance in many world cultures, especially in china where they are a symbol for heroism and are designated the protectors of the just and noble.
