Blue Wave and Trump Rage Wake Insult Comic Author From His Slumber

by
Dear F*cking Lunatic: 101 Obscenely Rude Letters to Donald Trump
Dear F*cking Lunatic: 101 Obscenely Rude Letters to Donald Trump
Twelve years ago he had his 15 minutes of fame, appearing on The Al Franken ShowCountdown with Keith OlbermannThe Stephanie Miller Show and more. Franken called his first book — the first of three — "hilariously snarky," and Olbermann told him to "keep up the good work."
But then life — and monthly bills — intervened. Author Tom Breuer (who was still years removed from transforming into Donald Trump bête noire and dedicated blogger Aldous J. Pennyfarthing) returned to a 40-hour workweek, and his dream of insulting blowhards for a living was put on hold.
Then came President Donald Trump. A trip home to the heartland (in newly minted Trump country) — combined with a memorable New York Times Trump interview — provided a wake-up call for Breuer. And that call said, "Torch this lunatic."
"After a trip to my childhood home in Wisconsin, during which I did my best to keep my contempt for our new president to myself, I returned to the Pacific Northwest and saw that Trump had given a really weird interview to The New York Times," said Breuer. "In it, he said that no visitor in the history of Chinahad ever been treated better than he had. Trump says a lot of ridiculous things, but for some reason that one just set me off."
In about 30 minutes, Breuer tossed off a supremely vulgar blog post, convinced it would amount to nothing more than a little spilled bile. To his surprise, the post went viral, garnering nearly 90,000 Facebook shares. It was also tweeted out to millions, including by comedians Chelsea Handler and Judd Apatow.
Breuer figured he was onto something. So he decided to write a lot more letters under his pseudonym, retracing the president's churlish antics throughout his first year and a quarter in office.
"Much has been said about the coming blue wave, and we've seen hints of it during special elections across the country," said Breuer. "But the tide really started rising the day after the inauguration. For an introvert like me, putting pen to paper has been the most satisfying outlet. But as we've seen, even introverts are marching. My role in this revolution is minor, but all it takes is a lot of angry and involved regular people like me to turn a wave into a tsunami. We're seeing that everywhere."
Dear F*cking Lunatic is available for $2.99 through AmazoniBooks and BarnesandNoble.com.

Retracing the churlish antics of our 45th president throughout his unforgettable first year and a quarter in office, Dear F*cking Lunatic: 101 Obscenely Rude Letters to Donald Trump takes both a laser scalpel and a rusty chain saw — in equal measure — to Trump’s boundless ego, bottomless stupidity, and brazen incompetence.

With acid tongue planted firmly in cheek, author Aldous J. Pennyfarthing takes on the president’s unsurpassed ignorance, rampant racism, shocking pettiness, vertiginous dishonesty, and more.

Based on the viral Daily Kos post of the same name.

by
"The Angry Birds Movie" (pictured) became a breakout animated hit in 2016. Sony Pictures announced today an all-star cast of new and returning comedy talent in "The Angry Birds Movie 2."
As Sony Pictures in association with Rovio Entertainment once again join forces on The Angry Birds Movie 2, the filmmakers have brought together a hilarious all-star cast of new and returning talent for the flightless birds and scheming green pigs as they take their beef to the next level.  The Angry Birds Movie 2 is slated to fly into theaters on September 20, 2019.
The first film's birds and pigs – including Jason Sudeikis (We're the Millers, Horrible Bosses) as the temperamental Red, Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Murder on the Orient Express) as speedy Chuck, Bill Hader (Barry, Trainwreck) as Leonard, king of the pigs, Danny McBride (Vice Principals, This is the End) as the volatile Bomb – are back for more fun, as is Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, Avengers: Infinity War, Three Billboards), stentorian voice of the legendary Mighty Eagle.
They are joined for the sequel by a host of hilarious actors and comedy stars, including Leslie Jones(Emmy-nominee for Saturday Night Live, Ghostbusters) as the film's villain, Golden Globe-winner Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Sterling K. Brown (This is Us, Black Panther, The People vs. O.J. Simpson), Mexico's comedy superstar Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included, Overboard), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley, The Post), Awkwafina (Oceans 8, Crazy Rich Asians), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Dove Cameron (The Descendants, Agents of SHIELD), Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live, Brigsby Bear) and Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project) have all signed on to roles.
John Cohen, producer of the film said, "I'm thrilled about our incredibly talented filmmaking team and the hilarious people we've brought together for the sequel.  We're so happy that Jason, Josh, Bill, Danny, and Peter are back for a second adventure joined by Leslie, Rachel, Sterling, Eugenio and this awesome ensemble of new talent.  We'll have many more exciting announcements to share soon."
The sequel follows on the success of the global blockbuster The Angry Birds Movie, which opened to #1 in 50 countries worldwide, including the U.S., in May 2016.  With $352 million at the global box office, it became the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.  The Angry Birds games have been downloaded over 4 billion times.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 is directed by Thurop Van Orman (The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Adventure Time), co-directed by John Rice (King of the Hill, Rick and Morty), and produced by John Cohen (Despicable Me, The Angry Birds Movie).  Mary Ellen Bauder Andrews is co-producing, Sean Charmatz (Trolls) is the head of story, Peter Ackerman (FX's "The Americans," Ice Age) is writing the screenplay, Pete Oswald is the production designer, and Linda Lamontagne is the casting director.  David Maisel and Catherine Winder are executive producers.  The talented team at Sony Pictures Imageworks handles the animation.

Book Release: Satirical Novel from 2076 Describes America's Self-Destruction

by
"The History of the Decline and Fall of America, A Semi-Fictional Satire" - Cover
"The History of the Decline and Fall of America, A Semi-Fictional Satire" - Book Cover
Azaria Press has released The History of the Decline and Fall of America, A Semi-Fictional Satire. Award-winning humorist Scott Erickson assumes the identity of a British historian looking back from the year 2076 to reveal how and why America fell.
The book is for people who suspect America is collapsing and need validation. The message to the reader is: You're not crazy, it's the world.
By examining America's past and projecting it into the future, the book allows readers to clearly comprehend how America's core assumptions have determined American history and will determine America's destiny. It shows that America is destroying itself while remaining absolutely clueless as to the reasons why.

The book provides insights into a variety of questions, such as:
  • Why is the cost of living continually rising with no end in sight?
  • What will happen now that oil is beginning to run out?
  • What are the effects of America's addiction to economic growth?
  • Why is America leaning toward fascism?
  • Why is the "dumbing down of America" turning into "America's embrace of stupidity"?

The History of the Decline and Fall of America openly embraces what America refuses to admit: If America doesn't change course, it's doomed.

The History of the Decline and Fall of America – Author Q&A:
(Via scott-erickson-writer.com)
Who is the audience for the book?

I think of the audience for the book as one of two basic types of people: people who suspect America is collapsing and need validation, and for people convinced America is collapsing and would like supporting evidence.

What value does it provide for this audience?

Hopefully the book will provide a kind of support or vindication. The message to them is: You’re not crazy; it’s the world. Because a lot of the time what makes us feel crazy isn’t what we’re feeling, but thinking that we’re the only ones feeling it. So in a curious way, I hope that the book will provide peace of mind. For those stressed about the possibility that America is collapsing, here’s some good news: You’re right!

A lot of people might think it’s a crazy idea to consider that America is going to collapse.

It shouldn’t be. The signs are everywhere, for anyone who cares to look. Although America refuses to openly consider that the country could possibly collapse, a growing number of people are actively preparing for it—not only “doomsday preppers” but also Silicon Valley billionaires who are investing in overseas escape properties. Respected economists openly discuss how our debt-based economic system can’t be sustained. Books such as Collapse make it very clear that America is following the same course as many doomed civilizations from the past.

But somehow, the idea isn’t openly discussed.

There seems to be a kind of taboo about openly considering the idea. Of course, it makes sense that people don’t really want to consider that the society they’re totally dependent on might collapse. Do parents really want to consider the possibility that they’re raising children to enter a doomed society?

Yet somehow a lot of people broke through that taboo.

For me personally, there’s a curious “disconnect” that can feel surreal. In my particular social circle, the idea of America collapsing is a no-brainer. When the topic comes up, the only question is about the timing—how much time have we got. Or what will be the trigger. But outside of that circle, I feel like I have to be careful who I bring up the topic with.

Because they might think you’re crazy?

Yes—that I’m some kind of “doomsday nut” or something. But over time I’m finding that a lot of people don’t find the idea crazy, but are afraid of breaking that taboo. I suppose that’s understandable, because lot of doomsayers really are crazy. Which is one reason why people resist talking about collapse, out of fear they’ll be seen as one of the crazy people carrying a sign saying “The End is Near.” As opposed to people concerned about collapse for entirely rational reasons.

How did this book come about?

My two previous satires explored environmental destruction and the growing embrace of stupidity. When I was considering what topic to write about, Donald Trump was campaigning for president. The rise of the alt-right and fascist rhetoric basically chose my topic for me.

But the title of your book doesn’t even mention fascism.

As I was considering how to approach the topic, it occurred to me that you can’t really understand fascism in isolation. Historically fascism has arisen as a response to social and political crisis. In the case of America, a main point of my book is that America is responsible for creating the crisis. You can’t really understand the rise of fascism in America without understanding the overall decline of America.

What makes your book unique?

Instead of exploring America’s problems in isolation, it examines then together to show how they’re interrelated and self-reinforcing. In this way, the book is able to provide answers to a variety of questions, such as: Why is the cost of living rising, and will continue to rise? What will happen now that oil is beginning to run out? What are the effects of our addiction to economic growth? Why is the “dumbing down of America” turning into “America’s embrace of stupidity”?

Why a “semi-fictional” book? That’s a very unusual approach.

It’s a curious mix, combining fiction with non-fiction, but it’s the only way I could communicate my message. Basically, everything I write about that occurs up to the present is based on historical research. As the historical past transitions into the future, fiction takes over in portraying how this movement may unfold. This allows readers to clearly comprehend how America’s core assumptions have determined American history and will determine America’s future. It reveals that, as Lao Tzu put it, “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”

You could have written a straight non-fiction book. Why satire?

There have been plenty of serious non-fiction books about everything I write about in the book. Such as the effects of environmental destruction. In the book Collapse, Jared Diamond made it extremely clear that civilizations that destroyed their environments did not survive. Yet what was the effect of that book?

Let me guess. Nothing?

That’s exactly right! You win this round and advance to the semi-finals. So we don’t need another “serious” book. From my point of view, all I could possibly contribute was satire. All I can hope is that satire communicates the message in a way that “serious” books cannot.

Are you concerned that people will find the book depressing?

This is one reason I think satire was the best approach. It can help us laugh at things that might otherwise cause us to sink in despair. It’s the reason that Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was so important. The prospect of total nuclear war and the destruction of humanity should be depressing. But at a very critical time for a lot of people, that movie allowed people to laugh about it. Hopefully my book will allow people to stop worrying and love America’s self-destruction. Don’t mourn the impending death of America, celebrate the glory of what’s left of America, while we can.

The Art of Shitposting: How Simpsons Fans Learned to Steam a Good Ham

by

The Simpsons

Jemma Gilboy, Nottingham Trent University

A scene from a 1996 episode of The Simpsons recently spawned a fresh clutch of memes across the web, shedding light on a very specific – and, for the average web user, peculiar and dubiously-named – form of online fan activity: shitposting. Like other Internet memes, shitposting involves users remixing and remaking snippets of popular culture – in this case, the “steamed hams” skit between Superintendent Chalmers and Principal Skinner – to create an original take.

One user created a version auto-tuned to the 1999 song All Star by Smashmouth – a tune with a memetic following of its own. Another created a version that follows the scene’s script word-for-word, using clips from Seinfeld. There’s also a Grand Theft Auto version, a Guitar Hero version and even a virtual reality version of the sketch.

These examples, among countless others, show that Simpsons shitposting is not limited to fans of the series; people come at it through other channels of internet culture, and from fan bases of other series. They also offer a glimpse into the evolution of shitposting, from an intentionally dull or offensive diversion tactic, to an increasingly sophisticated communication tool.

Cut the crap
The term “shitposting” originally described a subversive activity, whereby users of online forums posted irrelevant, shocking or offensive content on comment threads, in an effort to derail conversations. But in the decade since its first known use in the Something Awful forums, the term has come to refer more generally to the activity of posting content that’s intentionally devoid of value.

As the name suggests, a shitpost is typically intended to be of poor quality, low-level humour and little relevance to the forum where it’s posted. Yet Simpsons shitposting – where fans combine or alter well-known jokes from the series to create new memes – is gradually redefining some aspects of the activity.

In its early incarnations, Simpsons shitposting was as arbitrary and devoid of effort as other forms of shitposting. Rather than creating new content out of popular jokes, users simply recycled existing content from the series. But since then, entire groups have emerged on social media, dedicated to Simpsons shitposting – it’s gone from being a subversive distraction, to the entire focus of certain forums.

In response, shitposting Simpsons fans have upped their efforts. Today’s shitposts typically combine two or more gags from the series, appealing to the series’ most elite fans (read: those most familiar with the text). Because of The Simpsons’ worldwide popularity and considerable longevity, younger audiences are as engaged with the jokes as older fans, who enjoyed them when they first aired.

Not only do the clever combinations of jokes in Simpsons shitposts celebrate deep familiarity with the series, they also require considerable time, effort and skill with media editing and animation software. Doubtless, some shitpost creators are media professionals. But skills in, and access to, free, open-source, inexpensive, or cracked versions of such software is relatively common among younger users.

The ‘90s, now
What links together many versions of the “steamed hams” meme – from Smashmouth to Seinfeld, and indeed the original gag – is that they are all relics of ‘90s pop culture. Yet these references aren’t just the preserve of the 30-something millennials who grew up with them – given the trend for ‘90s fashion and entertainment among people now in their teens and early twenties, as well as the modern media references incorporated into many of these shitposts, it’s clear the younger demographic has seized on this meme, and run with it.

The first generation not to know a time before the internet is coming of age – and they’re bringing internet culture into the mainstream. Activities which were once subversive and taboo are becoming normalised, democratised and increasingly sophisticated through widespread engagement and good-humoured oneupmanship.

The ConversationTeenagers and young adults are taking charge of their future with grit and determination. As they do so, they are also making the past their own. And while their online leisure activities might seem odd, I must say, they post some good shit.

Antiwar Comedy Shorts Concludes Festival Run With 80 Festivals, 11 Awards

"G.I. Hospital" (6 awards in 35 festivals) uses stop-motion animation to tell the story of 6 wounded soldiers who don't mind missing a few limbs because after all, it was "for our country."
Based in Michigan, but shooting their films in Hollywood, Antiwar Comedy Shorts has produced eight films in the last two years. The first two were submitted to festivals. Among the 11 awards won were Best Comedy, Best Social Commentary, Best Short Film, Best Animated Short, and Best Actor Under 18 (for eight-year-old Kobe Humphries).
Writer/director Jonny Lewis did not submit the other six films: "It's nice to receive awards, but it's not really about any particular film. It's about showing there is a willingness to consider the antiwar point of view, and about using comedy to open people up to serious issues."
"Block This Caller" - An Arab and an American randomly meet in the desert and decide not to fight each other—despite phone calls from “important people higher up” suggesting that they do so.
Lewis has always been antiwar, though he admits to "playing army" when he was a kid, "because that's what society shows us on TV and in movies—that to be a man is to be strong, and help your buddies, and kill the bad guys." He got started writing antiwar comedies when he took to heart the words of Mark Twain: "All war must be just the killing of strangers against whom you feel no personal animosity; strangers whom, in other circumstances, you would help if you found them in trouble, and who would help you if you needed it."
"Gonna Be a Soldier"- 6-year-old Joey’s parents explain that he can’t be a doctor when he grows up because they are raising him to be a soldier, and kill people.
"Gonna Be a Soldier"- 6-year-old Joey’s parents explain that he can’t be a doctor when he grows up because they are raising him to be a soldier, and kill people.
Aside from the award-winners—Gonna Be a Soldier and the animated G.I. Hospital—one of Antiwar Comedy Shorts most popular films on YouTube is Block This Caller, which portrays the scenario Twain describes: An Iraqi and an American meet randomly in the desert and decide not to fight, despite pressure to do so from "the higher-ups" (and perhaps despite viewers' expectations that there must always be conflict between two such characters).
Says Lewis: "Our next step is to make the films available to the antiwar/peace community.
The films are offered free, and are not copyrighted. Lewis is working with Veterans for Peace and other groups to use the films in their outreach programs. (A Google search on "Truth in Recruiting" clicking on the "Video" tab brings up the Antiwar Comedy Shorts film with that title as the first result.)
"Truth in Recruiting" - A recruiter is forced by the new “truth in recruiting” policy to admit to a prospective recruit that yes, he “might die, or might get his arms and legs blown off.”
Antiwar Comedy Shorts is the brainchild of writer/director Jonny Lewis, an Associate Member of Veterans for Peace in Michigan.

"I Am So Sick Of White Guys: The Coloring Book Experience" Launches In Time For Christmas

by
“I am So Sick of White Guys: The Coloring Book Experience” - Cover
“I am So Sick of White Guys: The Coloring Book Experience” launches in time for Christmas
"I am So Sick of White Guys: The Coloring Book Experience" has launched just in time to hit the Christmas stockings of frustrated Americans everywhere. In fact, the political and social situation has become so confounding that even white guys are now sick of white guys!

Authors Jim Corbett and Tim Jones worked with artist Steve Hartley (all from just north of Seattle) to create a collection of cleverly rendered images that clearly capture the current cultural climate and skewer some sacred cows from history, as well.

Each image is accompanied by witty, sarcastic and, yes, sometimes even snarky comments that just might be the elixir you need to help you cope with what is happening to the greatest democracy the world has ever known. (Remember when our elections were decided by that insane thing called the 'Electoral College,' instead of that even more insane thing called, 'Russia?')

Are you tired of whiny white guys complaining that their gigantic piece of the pie is now being nibbled away by interlopers of other colors, races, creeds, non-creeds and even by people from an entirely different gender altogether? Well, it's about time! Are you offended by the 'Pedophiles for Jesus' wing of the Alabama Republican party? So are we! If you agree that the world is ready to hear from the many other voices that make up our multi-ethnic, multi-faceted society, and if you are getting less and less satisfaction from screaming at your TV, then I am So Sick of White Guys could be for you.
Some people have suggested this might not be a good time for a book such as this, but co-author Corbett disagrees saying, "There is a long and healthy tradition of political satire and parody in the United States, and we believe there is no better time than right now to make sure the voices of hatred and exclusivity are turned back."
