Why Star Trek Villains Are Better Than Star Wars Villains

by

I feel the whole world needs to know why Star Trek is superior to Star Wars. One of the reasons that Star Trek is so much better is because of the villains. Here’s why:

Motivation
Villains on Star Trek are much better-developed than those on Star Wars. What exactly is the motivation of Emperor Palpatine? Why does he hate the Jedi? Why did Darth Maul become a Jedi-killer? Did his mother get hit by a drunk Jedi going over the speed limit in his speeder? Darth Vader obviously motivated by wanting the power to keep his wife alive, but his switch was laughably sudden. He went from being best buds with Obi-Wan Kenobi to being a Jedi-baby killer in less than five minutes of screen time. Talk about good character development!

If we take a look at villains in Star Trek, you’ll see a lot better motivation. Kahn was motivated by revenge by the death of his wife. The whale probe wanted to figure out what went wrong with its humpback whale friends. The Borg were obsessive-compulsive freaks seeking perfection. The Founders of the Dominion summed their motivation this way, “What you control can’t hurt you.

The Future Is Not Star Trek?

Jean-Luc Picard as Locutus

I have always loved Star Trek, from the original series beginning in 1969 to the ever present reruns on television just about any day. Admirable characters, a stern but humane Starfleet code to live by, lots of action (but no gore) and the wonder of new frontiers. Traveling in glistening starships several hundred years in the future, facing all types of dangers. Great television, but the reality we are spiraling into will be very different.

Official: Star Trek Fans Rock! (Kinda)

by

"Well, at least they do when they play
the video game
Rock Band anyway..."

The future is beginning already for us Trekkies,
and it's a musical kind of future at that... Good Times!

Here is the Press Release we've received
from our friends at the Official Star Trek Site:

"MTV Games and Paramount Pictures Take STAR TREK
and Rock Band® 'Where No Man Has Gone Before'

First-of-its-Kind Promotion to Rock Fans During Month Lead-Up
to the Film’s Release on May 8, 2009

New York, NY, April 1, 2009 – MTV Games and Harmonix’s Rock Band® are joining forces with Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment to celebrate the May 8th theatrical release of the film STAR TREK from director/producer J.J. Abrams. The first-of-its-kind collaboration will fuse together the massive cultural followings of both STAR TREK and the video game phenomenon Rock Band to engage fans with free music, an in-game battle of the bands, and futuristic avatar creation contest.

Beginning today, fans can register for a 15-day sweepstakes that will give away 500 free Rock Band Music Store downloads each day from April 7th through April 21st for the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360® and PlayStation®Store for PlayStation3."

Not bad, not bad at all.

But, wait...
There is more!

"And if that’s not enough – fans will want to fire up Rock Band 2’s online Battle of the Bands mode to participate in the STAR TREK Ultimate Battle. Bands of three to four players can battle the Rock Band galaxy. The band with the highest score will win a STAR TREK hometown movie screening for their band and their friends. Additionally, twenty randomly selected players will win an awesome STAR TREK/Rock Band prize pack equipped with STAR TREK and Rock Band gear. The Battle of the Bands component will begin on April 20th and run through April 27th.

The Rock Band and STAR TREK promotion will culminate when the first-ever avatar creation contest launches on April 27th. Fans will be asked to create a futuristic avatar in-game and export it to RockBand.com for the community and Harmonix team to judge the winner. The Duke of Gravity will ultimately decide which avatar has what it takes to rock with the Enterprise crew. The winner will be chosen on May 11th and win "The Future is Now" prize pack including the top of the line Rock Band game accessories. "

Splendid!

It's like an early Christmas present for
both Star Trek fans and Rock fans... Cool!

And, now, my kids are not so embarrassed by
my "trekky-ness" anymore...
Definitely Good Times!

Good luck to all of you!

Have fun!

Live long and prosper!
