"Life’s stumbles" - A Guest Post by Author R.E. Mullins

All through my life I’ve stumbled or fallen into things. I guess what I’m trying to say is I’ve never had a clear direction. I’m more of a person that life simply happens to instead of forging my own path. Why? I blame it on being a wishy-washy Piscean who is swept along by the prevailing currents. Another Pisces, elderly woman, once asked if I’d learned to swim upstream yet. Sigh…the answer is not really. And that’s how I got into writing...

Today is another glorious day for LoupDargent.info, or, like a book loving Klingon friend used to say "Today is a good day to read", as R.E. Mullins - the author of "It’s A Wonderful Undead Life" (a vampire/romance novel) has kindly accepted to write a Guest Post for us...

I'm, of course, very happy about Robin coming here to "talk" about her journey as a writer, but I'm also a bit worried regarding the refreshments situation as I'm not too sure if I should offer her a cup of coffee or a glass of... erm... yep... blood(Sorry, I'm afraid you will have to read the rest of this post to understand this little joke).

Don't worry, she doesn't really bite... so keep calm and carry on reading!

Enjoy!

Life’s stumbles
by: R.E.

And that’s how I got into writing.

After a painful divorce, I began working as a phlebotomist in a medical lab. The co-workers were wonderful and the patients a hoot. Most had some sort of funny joke or put down for the phlebotomy profession. While drawing blood I’ve been called a tick, leech, and vampire. One old guy said I was one step up from the undertaker and the revenuer. Vampire jokes abounded.

As the work became routine, I began daydreaming about a story where a phlebotomist was turned into a vampire…the perfect tag line occurred to me that kind of exemplifies my life: What happens when you pray for an angel and get a vampire instead? In other words – life never gives what we ask for but it could be what we need.

This was six years ago. Over time I wrote my story. A co-worker became a critique partner and would take pages home to correct and bring back to me the next day. After it was finished, I printed off half a dozen copies and gave them to friends for their opinion.

Then, hopefully, I sent the 89,000 word document to several publishers. One, The Wild Rose Press, said they would take it if I re-wrote it into a 3rd person POV. At the time, I just couldn’t face the task and sat on the manuscript for several years.

Finally, last year, I contacted the Wild Rose Press editor again and believe it or not, she remembered me and my story. I took a deep breath and learned to write in the third person.

On 12/12/12, my first novel: It’s A Wonderful Undead Life was published.

Currently I’m working on the second book in what I hope becomes a series. It will be called: Vampire in the Scrying Glass.
