Why Can Bruce Wayne Never Seem To Manage To Throw A Decent Party Without It Getting Gatecrashed By A Supervillain?

He is Gotham City's most eligible bachelor and one the richest men in the DC Universe (even Superman only lives in a little apartment and he's the most powerful being on the planet). The world is Bruce Wayne's oyster; he can go anywhere, buy anything and date anyone he wants. So when he throws a party at his mansion, you would naturally assume that it would be the greatest show on Earth. Sadly for Bruce and his guest list, this is invariably not the case. Money certainly isn't the issue, so where does he go wrong?

So when he throws a party at his mansion, you would naturally assume that it would be the greatest show on Earth. Sadly for Bruce and his guest list, this is invariably not the case. Money certainly isn't the issue, so where does he go wrong?

He Always Has an Ulterior Motive
Bruce Wayne never just throws a party for the sake of it. There is always an agenda behind it, whether it be to gather information or draw a nefarious character out into the open. He uses his playboy persona to get an insight into people and events that his crime busting alter ego can put to good use. Because of this, he is always trying to guide the conversation in a certain direction, rather than letting his guests indulge in sharing their anecdotes. The expensive champagne might be flowing freely but the laughter isn't.  If it isn't relevant to tracking down a bad guy, Bruce does not want to know.

The Pitfalls of Leading a Double Life
One of the main reasons Bruce's parties are a flop is his mind is always elsewhere. His extra-curricular activities as the Caped Crusader leave him drained, distracted and dead on his feet. The last thing he feels like doing after spending an exhausting night chasing felons across the spires of Gotham is clinking glasses with a bunch of other rich people in his drawing room, comparing notes about speedboats and business ventures. He is going through the motions and it shows which leaves an awkward gap in the conversation and a dent in his playboy image. As much as Alfred tries to encourage his employer to keep up appearances, Bruce's crime fighting always comes first and he never quite manages to pull off the care-free rich boy routine, leading his guests to think that quite frankly, he is a bit of a weirdo.

The Arrival of Unwelcome Guests
Bruce's double life also impacts on his parties in a much more direct and dangerous way. In fact, he can never seem to get to the end of a soiree without one of his arch-foes crashing through the ceiling, door or window to cause murder and mayhem, which puts a bit of a dampener on the atmosphere. Before Alfred has even managed to bring the canapés out, Bruce is usually being taunted by a megalomaniac in clown make-up, or having his mansion burnt down by a secret society of ninjas hell-bent on destroying Gotham. As if this inconvenience isn't bad enough, Bruce is also sometimes forced to commit the ultimate social faux pas of being rude to his guests to get rid of them before the trouble really starts.

He Can't Go On Like This
Bruce needs help, that much is clear. Alfred does a brilliant job, but there is only so much one elderly English butler can do. Bruce needs assistance from a professional event planner who can supply him with the staff and support he needs to ensure his parties stay on track. By having the professionals in to do the hosting for him, pour the champagne and make sure anyone who is not on the guest list doesn't set foot through the door,  Bruce can concentrate on keeping the super villains at bay without it costing him his reputation in the process.
