Avoid These Self-Tanning Mistakes

'When self-tanning goes wrong...'
Before 1960’s the only way to get a tan is to stay outdoors and bathe under the harmful rays of the sun. Self tanning products were introduced due to the scientific studies that link skin cancer with sun exposure. Products that mimic the effects of traditional tan were discovered and developed in order to get tan without exposing the skin to the harmful rays of the sun. So today, getting a tan is that easy. All you have to do is apply self tanning products and viola - instant tan! And what’s really great about these products is that you can apply it to your body in the comfort of your home.

However, it is still best to caution yourself of using these sunless tanning products because of the varieties of products available in the market. Be prudent in buying products claiming that their product is the best sunless tanning product in the market.

The chemistry of our skin varies from person to person. The best self tanner that makes somebody else’s glowing tan skin may not have the same effects on yours. Thus, before purchasing the so-called best sunless tanning product, you should first test the product as it is easy to commit mistakes and be fooled with the unbelievable results that they claim.

Before undergoing the process of self tanning application, make sure that your skin is ready. This means that you have washed your skin and exfoliated it hours before applying the self tanner. It is best that you do it a day before your self-tanning activity. Exfoliation is a must to ensure that you remove the dead skin cells on your skins. Skipping this process may result to uneven and blotchy tan. And you don’t want that, don’t you?

After the exfoliation process, the next step is to apply the self tanner itself. The tanner product that you have chosen should be applied slowly onto the skin using circular motions instead of the usual up and down motion. Once the product is fully absorbed by the skin, then it is time to move to other areas of the body and repeat the process. The reason behind the circular motion is that it allows your skin to evenly absorb the tanning ingredients thus producing a flawless tan.

As for the skin on elbows, knees and ankles, it is advisable to apply a very minimal amount of self tanner product or better yet nothing at all to be applied on these areas. As the skin on these areas are especially dry, the skin will absorb more of the self tanning product applied resulting to blotchy spots.

Another mistake to avoid is choosing the wrong shade of tanning products. If you just began using a self-tanner, then you should choose a product that has a lighter shade in order to avoid having your skin become too orangey, yellow or brown.

If you pay attention to the above tips and advices, then you are on your way to achieve that exquisite tan you’ve always wanted.
