Filipinos React to 'Our Cartoon President'

by
"Our Cartoon President" - Donald Trump
"Our Cartoon President" ((C) 2018 Showtime Networks Inc. and Showtime Digital Inc. All rights reserved.)
Our Cartoon President, the American animated satire created by Stephen Colbert and his team, premiered in 2018, and is based off a prominent segment on Colbert's show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The series is a parody of the Trump administration and aims to give viewers an "all access look" at the day-to-day of the White House, as satirized by the writers.
Trump, voiced by Jeff Bergman, is the main focus of the series but is also heavily lampoons other characters that interact with Trump on a daily basis. This includes his family -- Melania, Ivanka, Don, and Eric -- and his administration, like the vice president, the White House secretary, and members of his staff.
The show also includes real-life events such as the State of the Union address and the White House Correspondents' Dinner as well as fictional events such as Trump delivering a speech at the Academy Awards.
The series, which now has 10 episodes, has seven additional episodes upcoming which are scheduled to premiere on July 15, 2018 much to the delight of its fans.
While the series is largely relevant to Americans, the show has also caught the attention of fans around the globe.

Here are the reactions of Filipinos who watched the first few episodes of Our Cartoon President:
26-year-old Karl Echaluse, a freelance filmmaker and improviser from Manila, lauded the characterization of the series, commenting that the way the cast was caricatured was especially humorous. "The way they look and the way they were voiced made it easy for me to identify them, or at least recognize them even though I might have only seen them a few times on the news," Echaluse shared. "It does a great job of really finding a characteristic or a quality about one character and sticking to it," he adds.
"I'm not very well-versed in American politics but I feel like the show gives me an idea of how crazy things can get," 52-year-old housewife Althea Mendoza says. "They're very brave to do a show like this. I'm not sure we've seen anything like this in our country." Mendoza also commented on how the show is not afraid to take things into more absurd and surreal territory.
34-year-old manager and mother, Shayne Losenara, agrees. "It's daring. It's clear what the writers feel about the administration and they get their opinions across very sharply," she says. "And it helps me get sense of who the people are that Trump has chosen to surround him, even if they're all a spoof of the actual people. I feel like it's still anchored on true qualities that are just exaggerated."
"As a Filipino, sometimes we don't always know what's happening in American politics. While I'm not saying that you should watch this instead of the news, it at least helps us get familiar with the who and the what. It's a step towards being a little bit more informed, and it's an entertaining way to do that too," Echaluse closes.

Ten Parenting Lessons We Learned From "Modern Family"

by
The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan in Modern Family.

Arguably one of the most popular and well-loved TV shows on today is sitcom and mockumentary Modern Family (which is available on FOX+). With a total of 75 Emmy nominations and 22 wins, the series has provided both critics and fans everywhere with fresh and clever stories about three very different American families.
The Dunphys are the traditional nuclear family, the Pritchetts tell the step parent narrative, and the Tucker-Pritchetts represent the LGBT parenting family.
The diverse set-ups lay the groundwork for both comedic and relatable stories, bringing home laughter while also teaching very insightful and touching lessons.

Still from "Modern Family Seasons 1-6 (Trailer) for Fox+"
Still from "Modern Family Seasons 1-6 (Trailer) for Fox+"
Here are 10 parenting lessons audiences can learn from Modern Family:
1. Celebrate the ways your children are different, even if you don't understand it
If there's anything that is clear from the characters of Modern Family, they all have a certain set of peculiarities. The children especially -- from Manny being a poetry-loving thespian to Alex an extreme geek, each kid from every family is unique. They even differ in heritage (Lily from Vietnam and Manny from Colombia).
Even if their parents don't always get their interests, they surely will always support them.
2. "Peer"-enting: Being a friend to your kids is important
"Act like a parent, talk like a peer". Famously quoted by Phil Dunphy in the first season, "Peer"-enting is being pals with your children while still guiding them, Phil demonstrates that connecting with them as humans and finding ways to be friends with them has benefits in making the trust and relationship stronger.
This way, you don't alienate them or detach yourself from their lives.
3. It's okay to admit your mistakes and flaws to your children
While many parents would rather that their children always see a perfect version of mom and dad, being open enough to admit mistakes to them takes the pressure of the parents and allows the children to connect better with them.
This has been showcased many times in Modern Family where viewers witness the kids being able to see their parents as people who aren't perfect, letting them to have more empathy for mom and dad.
4. Your kids can inherit the best of your qualities
Kids pick up on so many things. It would surprise parents to discover what qualities and traits of theirs their children have gained throughout the years.
Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of trust and letting the kids figure things out for themselves in order for mom and dad to see how much they've imprinted themselves on their children.
5. Walk the walk
Many parents can fall trap to telling their kids one thing while doing the exact opposite, and then chalking it off to "because I said so!" In one particular episode of Modern Family, viewers got to see the value of follow through and leading by example.
This ultimately lands so much stronger with children and really lets them learn the lesson well.
6. Don't underestimate your children
Sometimes, as parents, it's easy to want to micro-manage and try to get everything done for the kids. However, a little independence can go a long way and it could be surprising what children can come up with when given the opportunity.
Many times in the show, viewers saw Manny, Luke, or even Haley rise to the occasion, even when it was not expected of them.
7. Parents need regular "me-time" too
Parents can feel guilty about wanting to take some time for themselves, but not only is it healthy for their well-being, but it can also let the whole family decompress.
This rings especially true for new parents, just like when Mitch and Cam first adopted Lily. After some time for themselves, they felt refreshed and rebalanced for the new challenges ahead.
8. You and your partner are a team -- you should appreciate each other and make each other look good
Parent vs. Parent has been a running theme in Modern Family, maybe because it happens so often to real life parents. Whenever conflict happens, especially in front of the children, the tendency is to throw the other under the bus.
However, it is made clear in Modern Family that the best way out of any sticky situation is to work as a team, knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses, and continuing to appreciate each other.
9. Let kids make their own mistakes and experience life as it's happening to them, not as it happened to you
It's natural for parents to not want their children to commit the same mistakes that they did, but sometimes there are things that children have to experience for themselves. After all, parents can't protect their children from everything -- heartbreak, failure, or rejection.
There are some lessons that have to be learned the hard way, even if parents already know the outcome. In several episodes, viewers have seen all three parenting units of Modern Family have to watch as their own children have life happen to them.
10. You are probably doing just fine
The best parents will always doubt themselves at some point and feel like a total failure. The pressure of parenting is one of the toughest in the world and one of the most relatable moments from the show is when the parents show some vulnerability.
As long as everything is coming from a place of love, the mistakes can be forgiven and become a funny story in the end. Just take it from Modern Family.

Four Important Lessons About Family That We Learned From "American Dad!"

by
The Smith Family
The Smith Family. (TM and (C) 2017 Fox and its related entities. All rights reserved.)
American Dad!, though bearing similarities to its sister shows Family Guy and The Cleveland Show, has definitely made a name for itself in its own right in pop culture. With a focus on creating relatively more relevant stories and relatable characters, American Dad! creates hilarious and sometimes surreal episodes that still have heart and can connect with its viewers.
To date, American Dad! has released almost 250 episodes and has been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and two Annie Awards. It has also been named top television series by the American Society of Composer, Authors and Publishers.
The accolades the show has earned is unsurprising given its large fan base, many of whom have connected and taken lessons from the show.
Here are some of those takeaways:

1. Keep Your Family Close
This may be an obvious one, but if there's any lesson that viewers take from American Dad!, it's that family is the most important thing to prioritize.
While the Smith family has more than its fair share of trouble and adventures, they always stick together in the end, and you can see each and every character in their house practice this somewhere along the course of the show.

2. We have to accept our family's flaws in order to love them
In American Dad!, each member of the family is incredibly flawed in their own, often absurd, ways.
  • Stan can be incredibly rash and drastic, sometimes bringing home the extreme ways of dealing with things from his CIA job.
  • Francine is oftentimes a nag and can become scornful.
  • Both Hayley and Steve have been very inconsiderate, ungrateful, and selfish in the course of the series.
While the members of the Smith family have certainly embarrassed each other and irritated each other, at the end of the day, they get through it not by trying to change their family members but accepting them for who they are.

3. You don't always have to agree
One of the most central conflicts in American Dad! is the opposite political views of Hayley from the rest of her family. It's often the root of many arguments and problems that have occurred in the show and is a running theme across the series.
While it certainly gets brought up and tackled by the characters, Hayley and her family still have each others' backs despite not necessarily seeing eye to eye on everything.

4. Sometimes, you can choose your family
Not everyone in the main cast of American Dad! is related by blood. While they all certainly live in the same household, Klauss, Roger, and Jeff aren't at all related to the Smiths.
In Klauss' and Roger's case, they're not even the same species. However, it doesn't stop them from actively choosing to treat each other like family.
It teaches viewers that anyone can be like family as long as you treat them with love and respect.

5 Things That Might Be Different If "Family Guy" Was Set in the Philippines

by
The Griffin Family
The Griffin Family. (TM and (C) 2017 Fox and its related entities. All rights reserved.)
Made up of Peter, Lois, Meg, Chris, Stewie, and Brian, the Griffin family and their antics have continued to entertain audiences for almost 20 years in the satirical TV show Family Guy.
With 16 seasons, over 300 episodes and counting, the show has created a legacy with its loyal fan base. It has also earned several accolades, including 12 Primetime Emmy nominations and 11 Annie Awards.
Instantly one of the most recognizable and iconic cartoon shows of the past two decades, Family Guy, which is available on FOX+, has been re-imagined into plenty of forms of fan art and tributes.
From fan fiction, to recreations and adaptations, and even cosplay, it's clear that Family Guy has become more than just a TV show.
Here, the show tries to re-imagine the Griffin family set in the Philippines, and all the things that might be different in Family Guy:
1. The Griffins would be The Gregorios
Besides the alliteration, this re-imagined last name wasn't just an arbitrary choice. "Griffin" is the 114th most common surname in America, while "Gregorio" is the 114th most common surname in the Philippines
Call it destiny or chance, but Gregorio is definitely more fitting for a family living in Metro Manila.
2. They would live in Marikina Village
In Family Guy, the Griffins live in a fairly suburban village in Rhode Island. While Metro Manila is very urban, there are definitely places that are great Filipino translations for the suburban residence the Griffins have on the show.
Perhaps Marikina would be a great suburban paradise for this TV family to settle down in, should they find themselves in Manila.
3. Stewie would be the center of attention of all the titas at family reunions
All Filipinos know that there's nothing titas love more than doting over their pamangkins (or newphews/nieces) and being an audience to all their talents.
Stewie would definitely be one of the more vocal and intelligent pamangkins, and it wouldn't be hard to imagine titas asking him to tout his spelling and language abilities at reunions.
4. Lois would be a typical Filipina mom and head of the household
In many ways, Lois already embodies your usual Filipina mom -- doting, on top of all the household things, and the voice of reason for when things start to look too rowdy or sketchy.
Perhaps the Filipina version of her would love to cook menudo, wear dusters around the house, and constantly say to Meg and Chris: "Kakakompyuter mo kasi!"
5. Brian could be a different breed -- maybe even a mix!
It could be argued that mixed breeds, lovingly called askals, are more common as pets in the Philippines as opposed to purebreds. Given this, it might not be too much of a stretch to imagine Brian, who is originally a white lab, as a lovable askal
He'll definitely still be Stewie's best friend.

A First Look at 'Our Cartoon President', Exclusively on FOX+

by
The cast of 'Our Cartoon President'
The cast of 'Our Cartoon President' (© 2018 Showtime Networks Inc. and Showtime Digital Inc. All rights reserved.}
'Our Cartoon President' is a satirical new animated series that focuses on the daily life of Donald Trump
Everyone knows who Donald Trump is, but his life in the White House is a mystery to many. This is where the hilarious new satirical TV show, 'Our Cartoon President', comes in. Created by Stephen Colbert, the animated series premiered in February of 2018 and is based off a segment that was featured on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.'
The satirical show puts a spotlight on the current U.S. president and wants to "open the White House doors for an 'all access' look at a typical day in Donald Trump's world."
This of course involves examining his most important relationships, from friends and family to key political figures in U.S. government. The show doesn't shy away from portraying not only Trump, but also many of the people that surround him. This includes his family, members of the White House staff, and other U.S. government members.
The characters are all represented through very distinct caricatures of themselves, being both hilarious and very dead on.
The first episode tackles Trump as he attempts to prepare a State of the Union address that will improve his approval rating, while he also tries to fix his relationship with his wife Melania. As he goes through this endeavor, the viewers are given a first glimpse of his day-to-day life in the White House, which includes meetings, dinners, and even what the writers imagine Trump does in his spare time.
In the first episode, audiences meet the likes of Nancy PelosiTed CruzMike PenceMitch McConnelland several more. The character-packed first episode will might need one to be familiar with the current on-goings in the US government, but even if one isn't, the show tells audiences to enough for them keep following.
The first episode also highlights Trump's relationship with his two sons, Eric and Donald Jr., as they navigate their roles in their father's Presidency. Ivanka and Jared make a brief appearance, but one can expect that the two will play bigger roles in the future.
The episode ends with Trump delivering a bizarre State of the Union address, which works anyway, and ultimately mending his relationship with his wife.

'Our Cartoon President' (Still from the show)
'Our Cartoon President' (Still from the show)
The show makes the writers' opinions on the President clear by both lampooning him and the members of his administration and putting on display their less favorable personalities through their caricaturized characters.

At the same time, the show also gives viewers a way to look at the President through the lens of comedy and informing those who might not know a lot about the U.S. government in a more unorthodox way.

About Tyler Bates:
With an innate understanding of an environment's power, perhaps it's no coincidence that Tyler Bateshas become not only an artisan at architecting music for film, television, and video games, but an in-demand multi-instrumentalist, writer, and producer. Through the nineties, he logged 1,200-plus live shows in his bands, including Pet, released on Igloo/Atlantic Records, under the guidance of Tori Amos, before segueing into the world of film score. He started to make waves by creating the audio backdrop for the popular Zack Snyder Dawn of the Dead reboot in 2004 followed by his soundtrack for the filmmaker's 300.
By 2017, he worked on the most successful franchises in recent memory: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick. In addition to composing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 and winning a BMI Film Music Award for the first, he co-wrote and produced a fan favorite "disco version" of "Guardians Inferno" [feat. David Hasselhoff], performed the second installment's score at the 2017 MOSMA Festival in Spain, and crafted the music for the Disney California Adventure attraction Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout!
Meanwhile, John Wick: Chapter 2 represents the nexus of his work as a composer, performer, and songwriter. He penned the closing credits tune "A Job To Do" alongside legendary Alice In Chains guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and performed on-screen during the climactic "Rock Opera" sequence, rocking a guitar-viol on stage with Le Castle Vania and Nostalghia. Samurai Jack offered a similar experience. After overseeing score production for Samurai Jack with composers, Joanne Higginbottom and Dieter Hartmann, he took the stage to perform a suite of the score at a sold-out Ace Theatre concert.
Samurai Jack just one of his many TV credits. His sonic presence can also be felt throughout Netflix's The Punisher, Showtime's Californication, Audience Network's Kingdom, WGN America's Salem, and more as well as video games such as Killzone: Shadow FallGod of War: AscensionArmy of Two: The 40th Day, and most recently Crossfire.
2014 saw the birth of a powerful partnership with Marilyn Manson, touring the world. After meeting on a Californication performance, Bates went on to co-write and produce the 2015 epic, The Pale Emperorand the follow up in 2017, Heaven Upside Down. A runaway worldwide success, it achieved the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 at #6 and earned widespread critical acclaim with Rolling Stone hailing it as the "#1 Metal Album of 2015."
Bates handled music for the blockbuster Atomic Blonde starring Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron. For the project, he also produced Health's cover of "Blue Monday" and re-invigorated and revitalized Ministry's "Stigmata" with Manson for key sequences in the film. 7-Eleven may have gotten more than it bargained for by bringing Deadpool’s unique humor and charisma into its stores...
To celebrate the new movie, DEADPOOL 2, in theaters May 18, everyone's favorite Merc with a mouth, has made his mark (literally) at 7-Eleven stores nationwide.

7-Eleven has launched exclusive Deadpool themed products, sweepstakes promotions, and its first ever augmented reality (AR) in-store experience that literally brings Deadpool into the store, exciting fans with new surprise activities each week. All AR activities can be accessed through the 7-Eleven mobile app.
In 2016, the original Deadpool movie from 20th Century Fox broke multiple box office records, including the biggest opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie. Ryan Reynolds is back as the smack-talking Marvel anti-hero in the much-anticipated second coming.
Coast to coast, inside and out, participating 7-Eleven locations are blanketed with messages, doodles, and thoughtful musings from everyone's favorite hero.
"We are bringing an unprecedented level of excitement to 7-Eleven this summer. Our customers love Deadpool, and our collaboration includes exclusive products and an amazing in-store augmented reality experience that is among the first of its kind at any retailer," said Sean Thompson, 7-Eleven senior vice president and chief customer officer.

"Deadpool fans can come to our stores and find fun collectibles and different augmented reality experiences unlocked each week through our app," he added. "We hope people will play along with us – virtually and in real life – and share their experiences with friends and family on social media."
Exclusive Deadpool-branded items from collectible Slurpee cups and straws to chimichangas, Monster Mutant bottled energy drinks, Mike's Harder Watermelon Lemonade and Trolli Sour Brite Tiny Hands candy can be found at participating stores.
"To make this even more exciting, 7-Eleven is launching an Augmented Reality (AR) gaming experience, first of its kind in retail, with Deadpool," said Gurmeet Singh, Chief Digital and Chief Information Officer. "Fans can interact with Deadpool and have fun experiences in the 7-Eleven app, unlocking different experiences each week exclusively in the stores nationwide and in Canada. The fans will also be able to share their interactions with Deadpool inside a 7-Eleven store with family and friends. We think Deadpool fans will love seeing him come to life in our stores."
By scanning the 7-Eleven app at checkout, customers can earn 7Rewards loyalty program points and enter a contest for a chance to win prizes such as movie tickets, a trip to Las Vegas and more. But the biggest news is the in-store AR that invites Deadpool fans to engage in fun virtual activities (new ones each week) to earn 7Rewards bonus points.
While Deadpool evokes "maximum effort" to fight the bad guys in the movie, jumping into the Deadpool AR experience at 7-Eleven stores is easy. All it takes is the 7-Eleven app.

One never knows where Deadpool will pop up. Literally. Once unlocked, an experience can be accessed later, even after leaving the store.
