Every year, Toronto charity Daughters for Life (DFL) honours individuals who have made significant contributions to promoting the rights of girls and women around the world. This year, at its 4th annual Gala, DFL will be celebrating the achievements of Malala Yousafzai, the global icon for girls' education and the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Malala will be receiving the Courage and Inspiration Luminary Award for her ongoing campaign for education for girls in her native Pakistan.

In addition to Malala, First Nations writer and playwright Maria Campbell, best known for her groundbreaking book Halfbreed, will be awarded the Trailblazer Luminary Award.

For the first time, the Life Achievement Luminary award will go to a couple, Michele Landsberg and Stephen Lewis, for their joint efforts in advocating for the rights of girls and women.
"I'm delighted that so many wonderful people will be joining us this year," says Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, founder of Daughters for Life. "This is shaping up to be our most exciting gala ever, but more than that, it is creating a groundswell of interest around a constructive dialogue for peace in the Middle East, one focused on girls' education and the critical role that girls and women play in improving the lives of their countries, communities and families."
Dr. Abuelaish, now living in Canada, was a Palestinian doctor who practiced formal medicine in Israel. Already a celebrity for his work in using health as a bridge for peacebuilding, Dr. Abuelaish had been interviewed by Life & Style and People Magazine. Then in 2009, his three daughters and a niece were killed in the conflict in Gaza.

He chose to transform his grief into purpose and has received global recognition for his book, "I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity".

Also at the event will be Shlomi Eldar, the Arab affairs journalist who was the first to speak to Dr. Abuelaish after the attack. Well-known radio personality, Erin Davis, the host of the Morning Show on 98.1 CHFI will MC the gala.

The DFL Gala dinner will be held on May 25th, 2016 at the Carlu in downtown Toronto. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities, please visit daughtersforlife.com/gala2016

The Premier Sponsor for the gala is the International Language Academy of Canada (ILAC), Canada's leading English language school. Gomberg Mediation Solutions Inc. is the Gold Sponsor, followed by Spin Master at the Silver Level.

UK: #Brexit Campaign Is Doomed – If Bookmakers Are Right Again

by
Backed the wrong horse? EPA
By David Bell, University of Stirling

As we edge closer to the EU referendum on June 23, the latest opinion polls put the Remain and Leave campaigns either neck and neck or at least close together.

But the reputation of opinion polls has plummeted following their abject failure to predict the winner of last year’s general election. According to a recent independent review by Professor Patrick Sturgis of the University of Southampton, inadequate sampling procedures led to biased estimates of party support.

The Commonwealth Is Not An Alternative To The EU For Britain

by

A key question in the debate about Britain’s future in Europe concerns the alternative global economic connections available to the UK. The North American Free Trade Agreement, the European Free Trade Association and free-wheeling bilateralism all have their advocates. Yet one other alternative carries particular emotional resonance: the Commonwealth.

For some Brexiters the Commonwealth is the perfect global trading network for the 21st century. At times this position carries a hint of nostalgia. In the leaders’ debate before the 2015 general election UKIP leader Nigel Farage described leaving the EU as a chance to reconnect with the rest of the world, “starting with our friends in the Commonwealth”. Yet is there in fact such an alternative?

The Blurb:
Only weeks back from the war, Emme “Doogie” Sawyer is in trouble. She struggles to fight the war in her head while also trying to build a relationship with Raven – who has recently returned from Afghanistan and taken up temporary residence in her house. Unfortunately, it’s hard to lock down the bad without cutting off the good. Soon, Sawyer begins to slip deeper into the darkness of the war she thought she left behind.

Running from his own mistakes, Raven tries to be the support Sawyer needs to move forward, but he soon discovers that in order to heal, they must rely on their faith more than they rely on each other. Raven takes Sawyer back to his childhood home, to where he hopes they both can find themselves and the faith they left behind.

Will they be able to find their way back to each other, or will the horrors of war and past mistakes destroy them for good?

Desert Hearts: The 1986 Film About Lesbian Awakening That Gives Carol A Run For Its Money

by
BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival
By Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite, UCL

It’s 1959, and Vivian, an immaculately manicured and tightly controlled English literature professor from Columbia University, is arriving in Reno, Nevada, to stay on her friend Frances’ ranch while waiting for her divorce to come through. Prospective divorcees have to be resident in Nevada for six weeks: long enough for Vivian to fall in love with casino change-girl and artist Cay, a friend of the family. It’s the beginning of an awakening.

This is Desert Hearts, a 1986 film with striking parallels to last year’s hit Carol. First shown 30 years ago at London’s first gay and lesbian film festival, it returned this year to BFI Flare, serving up a heady mix of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll, casinos, cowboys, and lesbians. The success of Carol and the return of Desert Hearts reflects our need for stories that show not only the difficulties, hostility and discrimination faced by lesbians, but also offer up the possibility of honesty and love.

New Book Addresses Question: Joan of Arc, Lesbian or Transgender?

by
Joan of Arc: Her Trial Transcripts, by Emilia P. Sanguinetti (PRNewsFoto/Little Flower Publishing)
Pope Francis will release this week his long-awaited document on Catholic Church teaching related to the 2014-2015 Bishops' Synod on the Family.
The pope's document will likely provoke divergent opinions about the contributions that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons can make with regard to the spiritual growth of the Church.
With the publication of Joan of Arc: Her Trial Transcripts, author E.P. Sanguinetti provides readers with a modern English translation which clearly presents evidence that one of the Church's preeminent saints was likely a lesbian and transgender person.
