The autobiography of Georges Melies, the father of cinema, has been discovered by a filmmaker in London, UK. It is being published after being unavailable for 73 years and this is the first time it has been translated into English.
81 years ago, at the age of 77, Georges Méliès - the father of narrative and fantastical film - hand-wrote his autobiography. It has been completely unavailable since 1945 and has never been translated into English. This is one of the great unseen texts of cinema history.
Georges Méliès (1861-1938) is arguably the most important figure in narrative cinema history. He pioneered the Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror genres and was the first to create and use special effects. Many of his concepts are still used today and although his work is over 100 years old, he gave cinema its first iconic image - the moon with a rocket in his eye. Martin Scorsese's 2011 film 'Hugo' was an homage to Méliès.
"He invented everything, basically, he invented it all." - Martin Scorsese
Jon Spira a documentary filmmaker who works with the British Film Institute and directed recent Star Wars documentary Elstree 1976, discovered a facsimile of Méliès's handwritten manuscript in the collection of an antique bookseller in rural France and is now publishing the memoir in a brand new hardback edition.
Says Spira: "This is a hugely significant, long-forgotten text. A firsthand account of the birth of cinema from a man who was not only there but was its greatest innovator and artist. It deserves to be read."

More About Georges Méliès's Memoir:
(Via the Kickstarter  page)
This memoir is an enthralling story in which Méliès guides us from his childhood into his early career, explaining how all of the elements fell into place to put him in the perfect position to become a pioneer of cinema. He talks about becoming one of the first people in the world to see a projected moving image at a private demonstration by the Lumiére brothers and the international mission this inspired him to take to become a part of the new medium. He explains how and why he became the first impressario of cinema, how he built France's first film studio and how he invented special effects techniques and helped define the very format of cinematic film. More than this, it's a human story; at times braggadocios, joyous, humble and bitter. We learn how times and the industry changed, how he became the first victim of film piracy and how he ended up in his old age, forgotten, broke and selling toys and sweets in a tiny stall in Montparnasse train station. Most interesting to me was discovering that he was a man already aware of his legacy and surprisingly unhappy about how he could see he was going to be remembered. His memoir crackles with life and is a vivid account of the dawn of movies from its most colourful participant.

Scholastic Unveils New Covers For J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, In Celebration Of The 20th Anniversary Of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone In The U.S.

Harry Potter New Editions Illustrated by Bestselling and Caldecott Medal-Winning Artist Brian Selznick
New Editions Illustrated by Bestselling and Caldecott Medal-Winning Artist Brian Selznick Coming June 26, 2018
Scholastic, the global children's publishing, education and media company, today unveiled new covers for J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series as part of its year-long campaign to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Illustrated by worldwide bestselling author and Caldecott Medal-winning artist Brian Selznick, the new paperback editions will be published in the U.S. on June 26, 2018.

Rendered in Selznick's stunning signature black-and-white style with jewel-toned type, the seven covers depict thrilling moments and beloved characters from across the series, including Harry Potter, Hermione GrangerRon Weasley, Albus Dumbledore, and many more.

When placed side by side, the covers form a dazzling single image that tells the overarching story that begins with Harry's arrival at Number Four, Privet Drive, through the epic conclusion of the Battle of Hogwarts. Sharp-eyed readers will spot intricate details throughout the artwork, such as Hermione's Time-Turner, Harry's Patronus, the maze from the Triwizard Tournament, and the Hogwarts Express steaming toward a new school year with the next generation on board.
Best known for his dramatic hand-drawn illustrations in his award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo CabretBrian Selznick said, "I'm a huge Harry Potter fan (a proud Hufflepuff!) and to be asked to illustrate the 20th anniversary edition covers was an absolute honor. I knew this project came with so much responsibility to the stories, as well as to the readers. I revisited the books and was especially moved by the relationships between the characters in J.K. Rowling's magical world, so I wanted these covers to reflect that. One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the process was drawing seven independent covers that would stand on their own, while making sure that they also lined up to create one single satisfying image. It took dozens and dozens of sketches to get it right, and I am thrilled to share my great love for the books with these new illustrations."
Scholastic published Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the U.S. in September 1998 under its Arthur A. Levine Books imprint with an initial print run of 50,000 copies. To date, the Harry Potter series has sold more than 180 million copies in the U.S. alone, and over 500 million copies worldwide. The books are published in over 200 territories in 80 languages and have been made into eight blockbuster films.
To mark the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Scholastic is planning major events throughout the year including celebrations at bookstores, libraries, schools, and festivals around the country.
The Wizarding World will have one of its busiest years ever in the U.S. with the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child coming to Broadway on April 22nd; the British Library's exhibition Harry Potter: A History of Magic opening at the New-York Historical Society on October 5th; and the film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, opening in theaters on November 16th.

In addition to the newly-designed Harry Potter anniversary editions releasing this summer, with a collectible boxed set designed by Selznick to follow in September, Scholastic will also publish J.K. Rowling's original screenplay for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in conjunction with the release of the film, as well as books tied to the New-York Historical Society exhibition.
Arthur Levine, the publisher of Arthur A. Levine Books says, "Twenty years ago we introduced American readers to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, and for this anniversary moment we want to celebrate just how vital and relevant her storytelling is still today. The wonder of Brian Selznick's new cover interpretations is that he makes us see these beloved characters as if we're just meeting them – and indeed we hope a new generation does exactly that."
Since 1997, the world has been captivated by the magic of the Harry Potter stories from J.K. Rowling. When Harry Potter learns on his eleventh birthday that he is, in fact, a wizard – he is quickly swept up into the spellbinding world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry alongside new best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. As the three friends get to grips with Levitation Charms, and the rules of Quidditch, one of the darkest wizards of all time, Lord Voldemort, returns to threaten the very future of the wizarding world.
J.K. Rowling has also written three companion volumes in aid of charity: Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos), and The Tales of Beedle the Bard (in aid of Lumos). In 2012, J.K. Rowling's digital company and digital publisher Pottermore was launched, a place where fans can enjoy the latest news from across the wizarding world, features and original writing by J.K. Rowling.
Brian Selznick is the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of the #1 New York Timesbestsellers The Invention of Hugo Cabretadapted into Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning movie Hugo, and Wonderstruck, adapted by celebrated filmmaker Todd Haynes, with a screenplay by Selznick; as well as The Marvels. His books have garnered countless accolades worldwide, and have been translated into more than 35 languages.

The Art of Shitposting: How Simpsons Fans Learned to Steam a Good Ham

by

The Simpsons
 The Simpsons (Pe3k/Shutterstock)
Jemma Gilboy, Nottingham Trent University

A scene from a 1996 episode of The Simpsons recently spawned a fresh clutch of memes across the web, shedding light on a very specific – and, for the average web user, peculiar and dubiously-named – form of online fan activity: shitposting. Like other Internet memes, shitposting involves users remixing and remaking snippets of popular culture – in this case, the “steamed hams” skit between Superintendent Chalmers and Principal Skinner – to create an original take.

One user created a version auto-tuned to the 1999 song All Star by Smashmouth – a tune with a memetic following of its own. Another created a version that follows the scene’s script word-for-word, using clips from Seinfeld. There’s also a Grand Theft Auto version, a Guitar Hero version and even a virtual reality version of the sketch.

These examples, among countless others, show that Simpsons shitposting is not limited to fans of the series; people come at it through other channels of internet culture, and from fan bases of other series. They also offer a glimpse into the evolution of shitposting, from an intentionally dull or offensive diversion tactic, to an increasingly sophisticated communication tool.

Cut the crap
The term “shitposting” originally described a subversive activity, whereby users of online forums posted irrelevant, shocking or offensive content on comment threads, in an effort to derail conversations. But in the decade since its first known use in the Something Awful forums, the term has come to refer more generally to the activity of posting content that’s intentionally devoid of value.

As the name suggests, a shitpost is typically intended to be of poor quality, low-level humour and little relevance to the forum where it’s posted. Yet Simpsons shitposting – where fans combine or alter well-known jokes from the series to create new memes – is gradually redefining some aspects of the activity.

In its early incarnations, Simpsons shitposting was as arbitrary and devoid of effort as other forms of shitposting. Rather than creating new content out of popular jokes, users simply recycled existing content from the series. But since then, entire groups have emerged on social media, dedicated to Simpsons shitposting – it’s gone from being a subversive distraction, to the entire focus of certain forums.

In response, shitposting Simpsons fans have upped their efforts. Today’s shitposts typically combine two or more gags from the series, appealing to the series’ most elite fans (read: those most familiar with the text). Because of The Simpsons’ worldwide popularity and considerable longevity, younger audiences are as engaged with the jokes as older fans, who enjoyed them when they first aired.

Not only do the clever combinations of jokes in Simpsons shitposts celebrate deep familiarity with the series, they also require considerable time, effort and skill with media editing and animation software. Doubtless, some shitpost creators are media professionals. But skills in, and access to, free, open-source, inexpensive, or cracked versions of such software is relatively common among younger users.

The ‘90s, now
What links together many versions of the “steamed hams” meme – from Smashmouth to Seinfeld, and indeed the original gag – is that they are all relics of ‘90s pop culture. Yet these references aren’t just the preserve of the 30-something millennials who grew up with them – given the trend for ‘90s fashion and entertainment among people now in their teens and early twenties, as well as the modern media references incorporated into many of these shitposts, it’s clear the younger demographic has seized on this meme, and run with it.

The first generation not to know a time before the internet is coming of age – and they’re bringing internet culture into the mainstream. Activities which were once subversive and taboo are becoming normalised, democratised and increasingly sophisticated through widespread engagement and good-humoured oneupmanship.

The ConversationTeenagers and young adults are taking charge of their future with grit and determination. As they do so, they are also making the past their own. And while their online leisure activities might seem odd, I must say, they post some good shit.

CAIR Calls for FEC and IRS Probes of Anti-Muslim Ads Backed by Trump Supporter and Targeting Voters in Swing States

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for Federal Election Commission (FEC) and IRS investigations of virulently anti-Muslim advertisements that used Facebook and Google to target voters in swing states prior just before the 2016 election.
Robert Mercer, a top supporter of President Trump, reportedly spent $2 million to help fund the group behind Islamophobic video ad, titled "Welcome to the Islamic States of America," which featured the "Hollywood" sign replaced with the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great) and the Statue of Liberty wearing a burka. In the video, St. Paul's Chapel in Manhattan is shown with an Islamic star and crescent and Sports Illustrated magazine becomes "Sharia Law Illustrated."
Mercer was a top donor – giving some $2 million -- for Secure America Now, the shadowy group that produced the ads. The group told the IRS it only spent $124,192 on political activities, while reporting more than $1 million in political spending to the FEC in 2016.
"While these bigoted ads did not mention a specific candidate, it does not take a brain surgeon to realize that there was only one presidential candidate that based his campaign on anti-Muslim fear-mongering," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. "We urge the FEC and IRS to investigate whether these clandestine ads violated federal election or tax laws."
He noted that former top White House strategist Stephen Bannon, who ran Mercer's white supremacist and anti-Muslim Breitbart site, once wrote a film script that warned of America turning into the "Islamic States of America."
CAIR said it has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president. The Washington-based civil rights organization has also repeatedly expressed concern about Islamophobic and racist Trump administration policies and appointments.
Community members are being urged to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: www.cair.com/report
CAIR launched an app to share critical "know your rights" information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
